Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c 4000-2100 BC). The stone has been ground and polished to a smooth finish. The axehead has been broken approximately 77.8mm from the cutting edge, which is symmetrical. The break has occurred at a point where the sides of the axe are still almost parallel, just along from where it would taper to a narrower butt. The cutting edge shows signs of use with a number of small chips along it. The axehead is pointed oval in cross section. The composition of the stone is fairly uniform, a light grey/green in colour, with black specks thr…

A polished, Neolithic stone axehead (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The axehead is broadly trapezoidal, with a wide convex cutting edge, quite straight sides tapering to a narrow butt. It is broadly oval in cross section but both edges are faceted. This feature and the material the axe is made from suggest that the axe probably comes from the Great Langdale axe factory (in the Lake District). The cuttiing edge has a series of chips on both faces. there are also a number of large chips out of the butt. The stone is a fairly uniform dark brown in colour, with fine black viens running through it. O…

A flint Neolithic polished axehead (c.4000-c.2200 BC). The axehead is patinated with a variety of different colours, including pale grey, light beige, dark grey-brown and orangey-brown. The axehead has a wide curving blade and tapers towards a square-ended butt. It has a thick pointed oval cross-section. Overall, the axehead measures 151.3 mm, 66.2 mm wide, 38.2 mm thick. It weighs 424.77 g. The axehead has some damage along the its top and bottom edges, but the patina on the damaged areas is the same as the polished areas indicating that the damage is ancient.

Incomplete and damaged ground and polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The axe is a tapered sub-rectangle in plan, flaring outwards towards the rounded cutting edge, tapering towards the butt, and is a pointed oval in cross-section, bith lengthways and side to side. Both faces of the axe have chips which are more invasive along the edges, the weathering of these chips suggests various dates of occurence with some being relatively recent. The stone is of fine-grained type and a pale beige-green colour, possibly of Lake District (Langdale, Cumbria) origin. Axes of this type are dat…

Incomplete ground and polished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The rounded narrowed butt and mid-section of the axe survive with the remaining mid-section and cutting edge lost due to an old break. The axe is a tapered rectangle in plan, flaring outwards towards the, now missing, cutting edge, and is a pointed oval in cross-section, both side-to-side and, although truncated, also along its length. Both faces of the axe have chips, more invasively on one face, the weathering of these chips suggests various dates of occurence with some being relatively recent based on the sharpness…

The remaining two opposed large diamond-shaped faces are undeocrated and perforated to take the chord/wire this bead would have been threaded onto; the cylindrical perforation does not taper.
