Copper alloy Medieval to Post-Medieval thimble. Small and squat in shape. Folds in the metal on the inside of the rim suggest that it was made by stamping sheet metal into shape. The small, round indentation on the outside were then added by hand, as determined by their irregular shape and distribution, though they are roughly arranged in vertical lines with three concentric circles around the top (and a further two grooves running just above the base as decoration). The very top, however, is left bare, forming a tonsure-like patch with a single hole in the very centre. According to Ho…

A pressed copper-alloy cinquefoil mount of Medieval date. Several examples of such mounts have been found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 186). For a similar mount on the PAS database, see BH-7E1202. The middle part of the sheet-metal mount is domed and there is a small rivet hole at the centre. Surrounding this domed element are five petals, each with a convex upper surface. The underside of the mount is hollow. The object measures 13.1mm in diameter, 4.2mm high and weighs 0.82g.

Part of a two piece lead cloth seal. One side of the seal remains with part of the strip between them. At the centre of the seal is a hole where the point from the other part of the two part seal would have projected. The linking strip has a moulded design of raised parallel lines. On the remains of the seal is stampoed an ornate shield with a pale in a circular wireline border; around this runs the legend TVR[...] then a pellet border. The seal is 23.2mm in diameter and 1.3mm thick, the projecting strip is 5.8mm long by 8.3mm wide. It weighs 4.65 grams. Geoff Egan comments: "This is…

A late Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating from the 15th century. The thimble has slightly sloping sides and a domed top. The sides have been squashed inwards and there is a tear to one side. The surface is decorated with individually punched circular holes in a continuous spiral, starting from a bare 'tonsure' at the centre of the top and ending in a plain band at the base. Some of the pits pierce the metal. There is possible evidence of folding on the base which may indicate it was made by stamping, but this may be a result of the later squashing. The thimble is 19.6mm tal…

Gilt sheet copper alloy fragment of the end of a handle with incised floral decoration with sprays emanating at oblique angles from a central fleuret along to the expanded and rounded terminal of the handle. Some gilding remains in the form of two triangles of gold foil, following the oblique lines of two of the sprays, within the rounded terminal. The decoration looks 17th-century in style, like that seen on buttons and hooked clasps and eyes of the time. Read (2005) illustrates similar examples of this style with fleurets and ring and dot sprays on 17th-century buttons on page…

Pressed sheet copper alloy mount with fragment of leather remaining from within frame and four small rivet holes which would have attached it to a leather shoe as a decorative piece, emulating earlier shoe buckles. The survival of the leather and the way that the mount has been machine made both suggest a Victorian date. Read (1988) illustrates a similar pressed open buckle on page 178, No.1206, which is dated to the 19th century.

A copper-alloy mount of medieval date. Several examples of these sexfoil mounts have been found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard, 1991, p. 186). For a parallel on the PAS database, see BH-7E1202. The mount has been made from a piece of sheet metal. It has a domed central portion with a small hole at the centre. The six surrounding petals are of equal size and are undecorated. Piercing three of these petals is a rivet hole, each containing a small copper-alloy rivet. The artefact measures 18.1mm in diameter, 6.3mm thick and weighs 1.5g.

The brooch has been pressed from a sheet of copper alloy, so the raised design on the front in embossed on the reverse. The design alternates between parallel lines which have a central hole and four small raised pyramids. The holes are used to house iron rivets, which have a decorative function - as they have domed heads. Two are missing - making the holes visible. A lead seal of Roman date. Roger Tomlin (pers. comm.) points out that the majority of rectangular seals are legionary in origin (see Tomlin, Frere and Roxan eds. 1990, p. 93-100); however, the legend on this piece (see below) does not have an obvious military connection and must therefore be classified as 'miscellaneous'. The seal consists of a sub-rectangular block which appears to have been cut from a strip. It is unclear as to how the seal would have operated, as it lacks a hole for the chord to pass through. The legend has been deeply stamped into the surface, the letters themse…

A sheet copper-alloy end-cap from a medieval scale-tang knife. The object is sub-oval in shape with protrusions at each narrow end. There is a slight groove as the protrusions begin with transverse filing on the upper surface. The central rectangular slot has rounded corners. In profile the object is arched into a 'U' shape. It now has a largely dark green patina with some iron staining on the lower surface. Such end-caps tend to be given a 15th-century date.

Incomplete Medieval lead papal bulla of Pope Urban. Bulla were used to seal official documents of the papacy which came to be called bulls after the seal. In the medieval period bull was only a popular term used almost promiscuously for all kinds of instruments which issued from the papal chancery, including indulgences, although it now has a more strict definition. The obverse depicts the busts of St Peter and St Paul each within an inverted pear shaped compartment defined by pellets. Only St Peter, on the right remains complete on this piece, his beard and hair are shown to be curl…

Here we have a token to perplex those fans of Exonumia. It is most probably, a late 18th century half penny token but the exact identity will remain open to suggestion. There are the remnants of a ship to one side and a strong suggestion of the seated figure of Brittania, to the other. By way of a parrallel, the Fitzwillam Museum collection of 18th century tokens has a number of very similar tokens dating from the end of the century.
