This is a copper alloy halfpenny of William III ( 1694-1702). The obverse shows laureate cuirassed bust right with Britannia with hand raised on the obverse. The coin is badly worn with considerable debris stuck to the surface making complete identification difficult. There is little in the way of patina with mostly attach dirt/concretion and some verdigris to the surface where the dirt/concretion has fallen off.

Here we have a token to perplex those fans of Exonumia. It is most probably, a late 18th century half penny token but the exact identity will remain open to suggestion. There are the remnants of a ship to one side and a strong suggestion of the seated figure of Brittania, to the other. By way of a parrallel, the Fitzwillam Museum collection of 18th century tokens has a number of very similar tokens dating from the end of the century. A copper alloy halfpenny token, issued in 1666 by John Smith, a clothworker of Holbeck (Leeds). A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change.

A copper alloy half penny token issued in 1667 by John Dyson of Slaithwaite (Huddersfield). He ran the Greyhound Inn and issued a number of different tokens in the late 1660s as many merchants across the country did, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change.
