A post-medieval lead bag seal from Portsmouth (c. 18/19th century). The artefact is sub-circular. It would have had a central recess through which a cord would have passed. It is stamped on both faces with motifs in low relief. One face has lettering across its centre surmounted by a crown and with a rose below. The letters are obscured as a result of corrosion but appear to read '?G POST?' The other face has the word 'PORTS[M]OUTH' within a circular border with a central motif, indistinct but sub square in form. On this face a lip has been formed to one side. The artefact has corrode…

A probably incomplete lead-alloy bag seal of modern date (c. 19th century). The artefact is sub-rectangular. It is stamped on both faces with motifs in low relief, both set at a slight diagonal angle from the sides of the object. One face depicts a cow (bull) standing left with a calf (or sheep) before it, all within a double border. The other side contains an elaborate monogram, seemingly reading 'LME Co' (or 'MLE Co'), also within a double border. Such a company has not been traced, but it can be suggested that it supplied animal feed. Two identical objects have been recorded on…

A lead seal of Roman date. Roger Tomlin (pers. comm.) points out that the majority of rectangular seals are legionary in origin (see Tomlin, Frere and Roxan eds. 1990, p. 93-100); however, the legend on this piece (see below) does not have an obvious military connection and must therefore be classified as 'miscellaneous'. The seal consists of a sub-rectangular block which appears to have been cut from a strip. It is unclear as to how the seal would have operated, as it lacks a hole for the chord to pass through. The legend has been deeply stamped into the surface, the letters themse…

A sheet copper-alloy end-cap from a medieval scale-tang knife. The object is sub-oval in shape with protrusions at each narrow end. There is a slight groove as the protrusions begin with transverse filing on the upper surface. The central rectangular slot has rounded corners. In profile the object is arched into a 'U' shape. It now has a largely dark green patina with some iron staining on the lower surface. Such end-caps tend to be given a 15th-century date.

Lead cloth seal of four-disc form, stamped on the inner discs, with the initial of the alnager: 'S' surrounded by the word 'HAMPSHIRE' inside a raised ring border: the other disc is stamped with a bird within a shield, which is in turn also within a ring border. The bird has a hooked beak and bells on its legs, above the claws, suggesting that it is meant to portray a hawk or a bird of prey. This seal dates from the 17th century (Geoff Egan pers comm).

Stamped lead cloth seal of four-disc form: Disc 1: a tripartite motif with the number 24 below, which is presumably the length of the cloth in yards as measured. Disc 2: the initials of the alnager: TB to the sides of a flower (perhaps a pun on the surname - ? = Bloom/Blossom etc.) surrounded by a ring of pellets, with the legend 'HAMSHIRE' around the outside. Disc 3: a crowned heraldic rose. Disc 4: 'searched' written as SER/CHE/D. This seal dates from the 17th century, c.1600-1650 (Geoff Egan pers comm).

A damaged lead-alloy seal probably from a post-medieval bag. The object is decorated unifacially, with a device stamped in low relief within a circular border. The device may represent a pair of keys in saltire (cross keys), or alternatively the sails of a windmill (cf. tokens illustrated in Fletcher 2005, 75). The object has been squashed from both sides such that it is now sub-circular in plan and uneven in profile.

A clip or clamp made from thin sheet metal, now rather corroded. The object comprises a rounded cylindrical clip with a series of transverse corrugations wrapping around the body. In the centre of the two opposing sides is a pair of rounded lobes each pierced with a single circular hole for a rivet, evidentally to secure the clamp.

A complete post-medieval lead cloth seal of 17th-century date. This two-disc seal is of a type associated with imports from Haarlem in the Netherlands of a fine linen known in England as 'holland' (Egan 1994, 110; ref. 321). Disc 1 bears a moulded shield with the city arms: sword erect, four mullets to sides, cross potent in chief. Only part of the common inscription, 'HAERLEMS GOET' ('goods from Haarlem'), is on a disc seemingly too small for the stamp (at Dia. 18.6mm). Of the same diameter is disc 2 (formed by rivet head). It bears the numeral '20' in relief within a beaded circle; c…

Not strictly a trade token, this appears to be a lead 'disc' bearing the impression of one. The 'flan' is irregularly shaped, crudely trimmed, and of varying thicknesses: 2.85mm - 1.05mm. The token appeared to be related to a public house (the 'Hart'), although its location remains unconfirmed. Undated, this artefact is attributed the general range for trade tokens (c. 1648 - 1672 AD) as it would be most likely contemporary with token usage, albeit a later date cannot be ruled out.

A copper-alloy cruciform mount probably of post-medieval to modern date. Specifically of the cross-crosslet form, the mount has openwork squares between the cross' arms. It is seemingly pressed from thin sheet metal and the edges of the mount are turned over from the upper surface to the lower. The upper surface bears a decorative border created from punched dots following the shape of the cross. Central on the reverse are probable traces of the solder which would have held a central rivet in place. The mount has suffered from some bending as a result probably of post-depositional d…

A small medieval copper-alloy thimble of sheet construction. The thimble is domed with a ?pointed top (H.: c. 11mm); it has been squashed both from the side and the top. The small, circular drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular fashion. The thinness of this cast thimble might suggest that it was used for light duty work. The bare circular patch on top of the thimble, or 'tonsure', indicates a relatively early date; similar early thimbles are often dated to the 14th or 15th centuries (Holmes 1988…

An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date. The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. It has been bent and slightly twisted as a result of old damage. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example begins indistinctly due to wear, after which is a transverse ridge. Between this latter and a second transverse ri…

A copper-alloy thimble of medieval date. The thimble is made of stamped, sheet metal and is domed with a central hole. It has drilled pits of varying sizes in roughly vertical rows. There are two engraved lines around the base. The thimble is worn, corroded and slightly distorted. The dimensions of the base vary from 14.91mm to 16.04mm. The thickness varies from 0.79mm to 1.03mm. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan 1998 (266; ref. 824).
