A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The sealing is approximately oval in shape and hemispherical in section. The sealing possesses a circular perforation running its width which would have originally secured the chord which attached the sealing to a package or document. On the upper flat surface of the sealing is a stamped rectangular panel. The raised letters AL[...]//VIA are visible within this panel. Roger Tomlin, Oxford University has commented that the logical interpretation of this inscription would be 'ALAE VI A[...]' although he knows of no known 'ala' in Britain. The se…

Fragment of a copper alloy whistle of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1800). Length 49mm, diameter 5mm. Weight 3.92g. The weight includes some soil. The fragment is part of a decorated “hawking whistle”. It has been made from a single piece of sheet copper alloy which has been folded and joined by solder to form a hollow tube which is sub-circular in cross-section. The sheet has been thoughtfully cut so that the continuity of the decoration is not interrupted by the soldered seam which is clearly visible on the underside. The surface is decorated with three equally spaced longi…

Two-piece thimble made from sheet copper alloy. It is impressed with small circular indentations on the upper half of the thimble, above a wide band which is delineated by two engraved lines, one 3 mm below the indentations and the other 8 mm below. Within these lines is a very faint floral pattern running around the circumference of the thimble. In one section, there are the letters D L beneath the pattern, which could be the ‘cartouche’ with the owner’s initials within. Any other lettering is illegible. The top of the thimble is missing and the base of the thimble is nicke…

Incomplete copper alloy plaque or mount, probably 17th or 18th century. This object would have been oval in plan when complete. The surviving portion measures 37mm long and 45mm wide. It is too deliacte and fragmentary to weigh. It is decorated with a religious design that depicts the Virgin Mary in a boat, facing left. Opposite is an incomplete figure facing right, possibly an angel. Between them is a plant, possibly a lily, and above is the head of a figure in clouds or with wings outspread. The plaque appears to have been pressed out of a sheet of metal as the figures and inscripti…
