A copper-alloy sexfoil mount of Medieval date. The mount has been stamped from a piece of sheet-metal. It has six convex petals separated by grooves which cross at the centre. The underside is hollow and there is a possible corroded rivet attachment at the middle. The object is bent and corroded. It measures 16.6mm in diameter, 2.2mm thick and weighs 0.93g. Several examples of sexfoil mounts have been found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 186-193).

Flower shaped mount in a lead-tin-copper alloy. The mount has a large domed centre surrounded by a ring of eight circular domed 'petals'. The back is hollowed and shaped to the font as though it has been stamped out of copper alloy sheet. In the centre of the back is a lump of iron corrosion which may be the remains of a rivet. It is 11.8mm in diameter, 4.5mm thick and weighs 0.54 grams. Although Medieval flower mounts have been found nearby (e.g. SUSS-ADFCF0) this example is made of a different material, is much more regular and has an iron rather than copper rivet. All of these fe…

A post-medieval lead bag seal from Portsmouth (c. 18/19th century). The artefact is sub-circular. It would have had a central recess through which a cord would have passed. It is stamped on both faces with motifs in low relief. One face has lettering across its centre surmounted by a crown and with a rose below. The letters are obscured as a result of corrosion but appear to read '?G POST?' The other face has the word 'PORTS[M]OUTH' within a circular border with a central motif, indistinct but sub square in form. On this face a lip has been formed to one side. The artefact has corrode…

Part of a Post Medieval alnage cloth seal. The fragment consists on one side or a two or four part seal. On the front is a stamped design of a crowned rose with a C to the left within a pellet border. Several examples on the database have crowned roses with royal initials to the side (usually C/R etc) which are similar to this example e.g. SF-02F767 and SUR-FF8E42 where the design is on a four part Hampshire seal; they are thought to relate to Charles I, 1625-1649 AD. It is 15.6mm in diameter, 1.4mm thick and weighs 1.66 grams.

Fragment of a sheet copper alloy mount, flat in profile and section, and decorated with lines of punched annulets within a curvilinear, V-shaped border. The other fragment, also pictured here, was found with the decorated fragment and is the same thickness of 1.8 mm, so it may likely come from the same piece. This style of punched ornament can be found on other decorated mounts, illustrated in Read (2001) on page 36, Fig.21, No.320, and Read (1988) on page 148, No.997, which are dated to the 17th century.

Copper alloy domed Post-Medieval thimble. The dome rises to a slight point in its centre. The indentations appear to be hand-made as they are deeper at one side than the other. They are arranged in a spiral suggesting that the object is of 16th century date, when this became the most popular arrangement (Holmes 1999, Datasheet 9, p.2). Imported thimbles, with machine-made indentations, became popular in the following century, after the technique was introduced in 1620 (ibid. p.3), suggesting that this thimble was unlikely to have been produced long after this date. It has quite thick w…

Neatly made medieval domed sexfoil mount stamped out of copper-alloy sheet. Each of the foils is itself domed and the outline of the mount follows these lobes precisely. The curve of the dome is concave and there is iron corrosion from a rivet at the centre. Similar mounts in Egan and Pritchard 1991 (nos. 952-957) date to the second half of the 14th century. 13 mm in maximum diameter, 4 mm deep, 0.44g.

Pewter agricultural tally, cut into a sub-octagonal shape in plan and slightly domed in profile, with moulded foliage in the form of hops on the obverse and a legend on the back which includes the letters M THOMAS, probably the farmer's name. Within the legend there appears to be part of the number 60, stamped twice, which may refer to the number of bushels. Fletcher (2004) illustrates a similar example with hops and 60 on the obverse and another with Thomas on it on page 31, which are dated to the 19th century.

As the arms are stamped the lion is advancing right rather than the usual left. It is 32.6mm by 29.2mm by 3.1mm thick and weighs 17.52 grams. These arms were used by Sir Robert Drope Lord Mayor…

This is a copper alloy halfpenny of William III ( 1694-1702). The obverse shows laureate cuirassed bust right with Britannia with hand raised on the obverse. The coin is badly worn with considerable debris stuck to the surface making complete identification difficult. There is little in the way of patina with mostly attach dirt/concretion and some verdigris to the surface where the dirt/concretion has fallen off.
