White metal. Composite Button. A central domed button front is mounted on a flat disc with milled edge and central machine-cut or stamped decoration; the stub of a copper alloy attachment loop protrudes from a flattened central boss, mounted on the undecorated reverse of the disc. Suggested date: Modern: 1900-1960. Diameter: 23.41mm, Thickness (excluding attachment loop): 7.67mm, Weight: 5.77gms

Modern copper alloy three piece button. The front is pressed sheet with a raised crown and the raised inscription EAST SUSSEX GOAL around the outer edge. The pressed sheet back has an incuse inscription running round the seperate wire loop projecting form the centre. The inscritption reades R E HAYWARD/LONG ACRE/LONDON. It measures 25.1mm in diamter and weighs 4.44 grams. R E Hayward was based at 50 Long Acre and made private livery buttons as well as military and other uniform buttons. Cast gilt copper alloy two-piece button, circular in plan and flat in section, with a circular disc surrounded by moulded openwork decoration in the form of fourteen domed annulets, each with a border of tiny pellets. The back of the button retains its circular loop which has been soldered on as a separate piece. The upper face of the button is very corroded but the back retains some of the original gilding just inside the edge of the circular plate. Bailey (2004) illustrates two similar examples, on page 71, Figs.9.248 & 9.249, which are both dated to the 18th century.

Incomplete pressed copper alloy naval officer's button, circular in plan and flat in profile. The face of the button has been stamped with a large central anchor, with a smaller anchor below and on either side, all within a plain border. The button is bent on one side and the remains of the integral loop on the back of the button has been encompassed by corrosion product. Bailey (1992) illustrates a similar example on page 27, No.21, which he identifies as a Master's button, dating to c.1807, and thereafter it was used as a Captain's button.

Gilt cast copper alloy button with a stamped pattern of a central circle surrounded by flowers which emanate from a stem each, divided by lines of six dots on either side. Bailey (2004) illustrates a tombac button with similar decoration on page 56, Fig.9, No.125, and a 'dandy' button with similar decoration on page 60, Fig.9, No.160, which are both dated to the 18th century.

Convex back of a die-stamped composite three-piece sheet copper alloy hollow biconvex button with separate soldered, drawn copper alloy wire shank (this has been flattened against the surface of the back and now appears as a circular loop). Read (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 86, No. 357, which has engraved decoration on the front (which cannot be determined here) and is dated to the 17th century.

TREASURE CASE 2005 T135 A cast solid silver button, circular in plan, the face with punched ground and stamped with a flaming heart pierced by two arrows. Bent and damaged around rim at lower left and top centre. There is a small silver loop in the centre of the reverse of the button, which is bent. The precious metal content of the button fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %. The button dates to the 17th century.

Consists of two pieces of stamped sheet metal soldered together, with a separate shank that passes through a central holes (Egan & Pritchard 1991: 276). It has a bioconvex shape, with a copper alloy drawn wire shank at right angles to the body.
