Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete sheet copper alloy clasp fastener, pressed with a pattern of foliage. The eye for the hook is broken and open and the side attachments are also incomplete, but the two loops, one on each side of the eye, are still intact. These loops would have allowed the fastener to be stitched onto the item of clothing.
Bailey (2004) illustrates a very similar example with the same pattern of foliage on page 100, Fig.2.43, which is dated to the 17th century.

Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Sheet copper alloy hookplate or hasp from a book clasp with two rivet holes at the opposite end to the hook. The end of the hookplate with the rivet holes to attach the plate to a leather strap is flared, so that it is trapezoidal in plan. The opposite end is bent over to form a single central flat hook, 20 mm wide, beyond a rectangular-shaped (in plan) terminal. The upper face of the hookplate is decorated with punched lines of chevrons that form an hour-glass pattern of two triangles in the centre of the plate, which are bordered by two incised lines in the form of a cross. There are…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy cruciform mount probably of post-medieval to modern date. Specifically of the cross-crosslet form, the mount has openwork squares between the cross' arms. It is seemingly pressed from thin sheet metal and the edges of the mount are turned over from the upper surface to the lower. The upper surface bears a decorative border created from punched dots following the shape of the cross. Central on the reverse are probable traces of the solder which would have held a central rivet in place. The mount has suffered from some bending as a result probably of post-depositional d…

Pressed copper alloy fragment of a mount, possibly the centre of an umbonate bridle boss, although less robust. The central fleuret has six round petals, which then emanate out into six pointed petals. Within each of the pointed petals is a five-pointed star. One of the pointed petals has broken off, and connected to the tips of two others are the remains of continued openwork decoration with circular apertures.
Read (1988) illustrates an example of a bridle boss with a similar central fleuret on page 150, No.1018, which is dated to the 17th century.

A fragment of copper alloy sheet with a stamped symmetrical pattern of two scrolling ends either side of an upright. The impression of the pattern shows on the reverse. There is a D-shaped recess at one end which might suggest use as a buckle plate. The other end appears to be cut. The fragment may have been re-used. There is a trace of an incised right-angled border in one corner.

Incomplete pressed sheet copper alloy rectangular mount or plaque with scrolls and fleurets surrounded by a scrolled border with six-petalled flowers in every scroll.
The patterns and style of the piece suggest that it is 18th century in date. Moulded fleurets and scrolls are often seen on Georgian shoe and hat buckles, such as on three examples illustrated in Whitehead (1996) on page 108, Nos.695-6, and on page 113, No.727, which are dated from c.1720-1790s.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small medieval copper-alloy thimble of sheet construction. The thimble is domed with a ?pointed top (H.: c. 11mm); it has been squashed both from the side and the top. The small, circular drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular fashion. The thinness of this cast thimble might suggest that it was used for light duty work. The bare circular patch on top of the thimble, or 'tonsure', indicates a relatively early date; similar early thimbles are often dated to the 14th or 15th centuries (Holmes 1988…

A copper-alloy cruciform mount of post-medieval to modern date. The form of this cross is identified by Mitchiner as being connected with The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre (1986; pp. 244) and is probably a pilgrim souvenir. The nature of this piece strongly suggests that it was made on an industrial press, hence the suggested date. It is deemed suitable for recording, however, as it was found in close proximity to two other cruciform mounts (BH-688C74 and BH-688E44), both of which may be of an earlier date. The discovery of three such pieces is unusual and may point to a hitherto unkno…

Fragment of a stamped copper alloy sheet mount, probably a belt mount. The fragment appears to be from the bottom left corner with a straight lower edge and a zig-zag left edge. This left edge has a pierced circular hole for attachment. The raised decoration appears to show a bird in the central section, with its head turned to look behind it to the left. The detail in the right hand section is not clear but may represent foliage.

An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date. The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. It has been bent and slightly twisted as a result of old damage. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example begins indistinctly due to wear, after which is a transverse ridge. Between this latter and a second transverse ri…
