Here we have a token to perplex those fans of Exonumia. It is most probably, a late 18th century half penny token but the exact identity will remain open to suggestion. There are the remnants of a ship to one side and a strong suggestion of the seated figure of Brittania, to the other. By way of a parrallel, the Fitzwillam Museum collection of 18th century tokens has a number of very similar tokens dating from the end of the century. (See CM_QC_3951-R(2) at http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/dept/coins/opac/).

Copper alloy transport token with five roundels counterstamped on the reverse of a halfpenny of George III (1760-1820), dated to 1799 on the reverse. "Counterstamping of bronze coinage was outlawed by the 1853 Coinage Act following the industrial scale of Edward Lloyd's newspaper advertisements in the late 1840s" (Edward Besly pers comm). So the coin would have been used before this time, c.1799-1853. The five roundels suggest that the token might have been used as a gaming piece, but as it was found with another George III penny (CORN-5055E0) counterstamped with the words 'TO D…

Copper alloy transport token with the words: 'TO DOWNDERY' counterstamped on the reverse of a halfpenny of George III (1760-1820), dated to 1806 on the obverse. "Counterstamping of bronze coinage was outlawed by the 1853 Coinage Act following the industrial scale of Edward Lloyd's newspaper advertisements in the late 1840s" (Edward Besly pers comm). So the coin would have been used before this time, c.1806-1853. The place name probably refers to the Downderry that is not far from the findspot, in the parish of St. Stephen in Brannel, near St. Austell.

A copper alloy token, issued by George Lamplugh of Beverley. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. Lamplugh may have run an inn given the inscription 'at the', but the name of the inn is not included in the reverse inscription as would be expected.

A copper alloy mid 17th century halfpenny token, issued by Richard Stockdale of Hull in 1665. His profession is not clear from the token but Thompson and Dickinson suggest he was a mariner. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the mid 17th century, particularly in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. Charles II began minting an official copper coinage in 1672 to address this.

A copper alloy token from the late 1660s. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. This one may have been issued by merchant in Otley (though the inscription is a little uncertain), whose name probably begins John Pu... There is a grocer from Otley named John Pullen who jointly issued tokens with Christopher Ward. This could be one he issued alone. The arms may also support this as the grocers' arms have a chevron with 3 triple devices.
