A sheet copper-alloy end-cap from a medieval scale-tang knife. The object is sub-oval in shape with protrusions at each narrow end. There is a slight groove as the protrusions begin with transverse filing on the upper surface. The central rectangular slot has rounded corners. In profile the object is arched into a 'U' shape. It now has a largely dark green patina with some iron staining on the lower surface. Such end-caps tend to be given a 15th-century date.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy cruciform mount probably of post-medieval to modern date. Specifically of the cross-crosslet form, the mount has openwork squares between the cross' arms. It is seemingly pressed from thin sheet metal and the edges of the mount are turned over from the upper surface to the lower. The upper surface bears a decorative border created from punched dots following the shape of the cross. Central on the reverse are probable traces of the solder which would have held a central rivet in place. The mount has suffered from some bending as a result probably of post-depositional d…

A small medieval copper-alloy thimble of sheet construction. The thimble is domed with a ?pointed top (H.: c. 11mm); it has been squashed both from the side and the top. The small, circular drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular fashion. The thinness of this cast thimble might suggest that it was used for light duty work. The bare circular patch on top of the thimble, or 'tonsure', indicates a relatively early date; similar early thimbles are often dated to the 14th or 15th centuries (Holmes 1988…

An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date. The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. It has been bent and slightly twisted as a result of old damage. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example begins indistinctly due to wear, after which is a transverse ridge. Between this latter and a second transverse ri…

The thickness varies from 0.79mm to 1.03mm. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan 1998 (266; ref. 824).
