This is a silver shilling of William III from the Chester mint, which may be dated to 1696 or 97. This year 1696 was significant in English coinage as it was the year of the great re-coinage to replace the hammered silver that was still in circulation.
The coin has the letter ‘C’ under the bust, indicative of the branch mint at Chester. The general condition of the coin is poor, being very worn on the reverse.
