A lead seal of Roman date. Roger Tomlin (pers. comm.) points out that the majority of rectangular seals are legionary in origin (see Tomlin, Frere and Roxan eds. 1990, p. 93-100); however, the legend on this piece (see below) does not have an obvious military connection and must therefore be classified as 'miscellaneous'. The seal consists of a sub-rectangular block which appears to have been cut from a strip. It is unclear as to how the seal would have operated, as it lacks a hole for the chord to pass through. The legend has been deeply stamped into the surface, the letters themse…

Pottery stamped handle with four parallel linear stamps below the flat rim. This is most likely from a pottery jug or flagon, imitating Roman pewter flagons, so a Romano-British derivative. The fabric is is a light orangey brown colour throughout and contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The exterior surface has been black-coated but only on either side of the decoration, where the handle attaches to the neck of the vessel. The handle is similar to a pottery jug containing a Roman cremation, r…

An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date. The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. It has been bent and slightly twisted as a result of old damage. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example begins indistinctly due to wear, after which is a transverse ridge. Between this latter and a second transverse ri…

Paul and Charmian Woodfield (see notes, below) write: 'Base metal finger-ring open on one side, and having enlarged snake head terminals. The interior has traces of silvering, suggesting that it was originally silvered all over. This is a well known Roman mass produced style of jewellery, which can occur in a variety of metals, including in gold (Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire - bracelet), silver, and bronze. The nearest similar findspot for a snake-headed artefact is at Castlethorpe (Buckinghamshire - pair of silver bracelets of c. 1st century; 1/2 mile distant) where other jeweller…

A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The sealing is approximately oval in shape and hemispherical in section. The sealing possesses a circular perforation running its width which would have originally secured the chord which attached the sealing to a package or document. On the upper flat surface of the sealing is a stamped rectangular panel. The raised letters AL[...]//VIA are visible within this panel. Roger Tomlin, Oxford University has commented that the logical interpretation of this inscription would be 'ALAE VI A[...]' although he knows of no known 'ala' in Britain. The se…
