Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of possible Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section and with faceted exterior edges on the top surface. Both front and back faces appear to be undecorated and the casting is crudly done. It measures 39.6mm in length, 34.4mm in width, 15.1mm in thickness, and weighs 167.8 grams. The lack of defined decorative motifs renders the dating of this object uncertain, although associated finds might indicate a Medeival to Post-Medieval periods.

Cast lead alloy circular spindle whorl or weight. It is circular with a highly domed, almost semi-circular, top and flat base. There is a circular hole running through the middle and possible traces of raised decoration on the top. Due to the simpilicity of the shape it is hard to date it precisely and it could be Roman - Post Medieval. It is 19.9mm in diameter, 9.5mm thick and 15.95 grams in weight; the central hole is a maximum of 6.1mm.

Five cast lead weights.
Two of the weights are cone shaped with flat bases, slightly flattened tops and sloping sides. One is 35.5mm in diameter, 32.9mm tall and weighs 147 grams. The other is 27.7mm in diameter, 24.9mm tall and weighs 51 grams.
Two of the weights are cylindrical, circular in plan with a flat base and top and a cicular hole running through from top to bottom. Both central holes narrow towards the top and the diameters given are maximums. One weight is 24.3mm in diameter by 17.2mm tall with a hole 8.9mm in diameter at the bottom and it weighs 45 grams. The other is …

Cast lead weight, oval in profile and circular in plan with a circular hole running most of the way through the lengh but blocked at the end. It probably held a rod with the weight acting as some type of counterweight. The surface is uneven. It is 32.2mm in diameter, 45.2mm tall and weighs 193 grams. The hole is 9.4mm in diameter.
Cast lead weights were often made at home or locally for a wide range of uses, they are therefore hard to date precisely but most are Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval in date.

Cast lead disk shaped weight. The weight is sub-circular as a piece has been cut from one side. Several incised lines running across one side near this cut may suggest it was deliberate. The top and bottom are plain apart form the incised lines and multiple, irregularly spaced, stamped annulets. The sides are rounded. It is 34.3mm long, 28.2mm wide and 5.5mm thick, it weighs 34.58 grams.
Simple weights like this were often made locally for a wide range of purposes and are hard to date precisely, they can be Roman - Modern in date.

On one side is a slight rectangular projections and old break where it was attached to the rest of the object. This attachement takes up c.one sixth of the loop. To one side there appears to be a break in the side of the projection with two transverse grooves flanking a raised area.
It is 24.7mm externally, 11.5mm internally, 26.9mm across including the projection and 7.2mm thick; it weighs 16.71 grams.

Incomplete cast copper alloy object. It is rod like with a central wide circular sectioned piece tapering to rectangular projections at each end, one of which may be complete. There is a central circular ring 19.0mm in diameter and 5.9mm wide flanked by two collars. These are flanked by constrictions 11.3mm in diameter beyond which there are pairs of collars 12.3mm in diameter. Beyond these the ends start to taper gradually and become more rectangular. One may be complete and ends in a rectangular sectioned slightly rounded end. The other is broken with old breaks. It is 54.5mm long in…
