Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950 Length: 24.0mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 9.3mm, Weight: 23.22gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven surface with off-centre dimple and a flat base; perhaps cast in an open mould suggesting the flat side to have been uppermost at the time of fabrication. Opposed pairs of nicks appear on the flat side. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its relatively recent date. Though a weight close to this mass was reported from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, table 15) though it was not thought to respect any prevailing standard. This object might alternatively represent one and a half averdepois ounces, perhaps as a homemade weight for the k…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

A complete lead-alloy gaming piece or weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-conical with a base that has an uneven concave hollow at its centrebase and tapering sides to a rounded top. It appears undecorated. The object is 18.8mm tall, 23.2mm in diameter and weighs 41.50 g. Lead objects such as this are common metal detector finds but are rare from excavated contexts. This means that the dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Similarly shaped objects are known from Viking contexts and are interpreted as weig…

Lead and copper alloy weight. Cast plano-convex oval or coffee-bean-shaped object with an embedded longitudinal copper alloy strip [of length 17.7mm and width 1.3mm] which appears on both the flat and convex or keeled sides of the object. There is the suspicion of a basal rim, which might be apt to a piece for a board game, as kindly suggested by the finder. Patinated. The neat and vulvate appearance might point to a Roman date. The flat base would permit use as a standing weight with a balance, possibly representing one quarter uncia. Inset objects are more usually associated with Vik…
