Roman or Post Medieval? copper alloy ear scoop, 49mm long, 6mm wide and 2mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 3.60 grams. The object is linear in form and rectangular in section. It consists of a twisted bar which has a spoon-like flattened terminal at both ends, suggesting it is an ear scoop. The object has been bent to form a U shape, its original length would be 97mm.

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy object, quite possibly part of a Roman toilet article, probably an ear scoop. The object has a slightly flared terminal and tapers towards a break. It is curved, although it is not clear whether this is a result of damage or design. It is entirely undecorated. It measures 33.07 mm long, 4.69 mm wide, 2.25 mm thick. It weighs 2.2 grams. It has an abraded green patina. Other Roman finds recovered from the general area support a likely Roman date for this object.

A complete copper-alloy Roman ear scoop. The stem of the object is rectangular in section. It probably belonged to a suspended manicure set; there is a perforation for suspension at the end opposite the scoop. The stem is perpendicular to the angle of the loop; it is wide and flat and tapers to 2.71mm just before the bowl of the shallow concave scoop which measures 3.63mm in diameter.

A fragment of a Roman cosmetic or surgical implement. The fragment is the scoop from an ear scoop or a spoon-probe. The scoop is small and narrow, and such scoops tend to be associated with the surgical ear scoop as opposed to the small cupped types which are thought to have been for cosmetic use. However, spoon-probes, used for the application of cosmetics also have a narrow scoop, and without the rest of the artefact it is difficult to determine whether this is a surgical or cosmetic article. Some examples of scoops are demonstrated in Crummy 'The Roman Small Finds From Excavations …

Roman copper alloy Ligula or scoop, 90mm long and 6mm wide. The object consists of a shallow elongated bowl, 25mm long and 6mm at its widest point, which is missing its end. This terminates with an indented bead attached to a shaft. The shaft is circular and 3mm in diameter and has short diagonal incisions running along its surface for c. 20mm. It terminates in a oval shaped bulge which is 11mm long and 5mm wide. The shaft appears to have been deliberately bent three quarters of the way along its length.

An incomplete cast copper alloy object, probably a Roman ear scoop or associated probe. The object consists of a two-ended implement, with one end comprising a pyriform-shaped flat disc and the other a broken sub-oval smaller scoop or suspension loop. The sub-oval shaft in between these terminals is decorated at least halfway with simple incised rings around its circumference and a more closely set series of three rings directly below the small scoop or suspension loop. The larger end would have been used as either a medical probe or ear scoop and was probably originally cupped sli…

A complete but bent and twisted double ended toilet article, probably an ear scoop. The artefact would have originally been a straight cylindrical bar (c.2.3mm diameter) with two terminals which flatten and widen into elongated drop shaped (piriform) scoops with convex bottoms and concave tops. However at some point it appear to have been bent roughly in its middle into a U-shape with both the terminals then bent at 90 degrees. The artefact is a mid green colour all over. In its bent form the object is 39.7mm long and each terminal is 5.5mm wide. It is possible to sugge…

A complete copper-alloy toilet article often termed an ear scoop dating to the Roman period c. AD 200-402. The ear scoop is flat/rectangular in cross section, save for the circular spoon bowl which is domed and convex on one side and concave on the other to provide a regularly shaped bowl. At the top of the object is an oval attachment loop that is 7.4mm long and 7.6mm wide. At its centre is a circular hole that has a diameter of 3.1mm.
