Roman copper alloy Ligula or scoop, 90mm long and 6mm wide. The object consists of a shallow elongated bowl, 25mm long and 6mm at its widest point, which is missing its end. This terminates with an indented bead attached to a shaft. The shaft is circular and 3mm in diameter and has short diagonal incisions running along its surface for c. 20mm. It terminates in a oval shaped bulge which is 11mm long and 5mm wide. The shaft appears to have been deliberately bent three quarters of the way along its length.

This narrows to form a shaft which starts 1.5mm wide and very gradually widens to 4mm. At this point, 22mm from the end the object tapers in sharply and a band of decoration begins. The decoration consists of two eliptical knops 5mm wide, above this is a balustrade? or pear-shaped bulge 6mm wide. The object then tapers outwards slightly and terminates with a band made up of three pronounced ridges. The …

A fragment of a Roman cosmetic or surgical implement. The fragment is the scoop from an ear scoop or a spoon-probe. The scoop is small and narrow, and such scoops tend to be associated with the surgical ear scoop as opposed to the small cupped types which are thought to have been for cosmetic use. However, spoon-probes, used for the application of cosmetics also have a narrow scoop, and without the rest of the artefact it is difficult to determine whether this is a surgical or cosmetic article. Some examples of scoops are demonstrated in Crummy 'The Roman Small Finds From Excavations …

A complete copper-alloy Roman ear scoop. The stem of the object is rectangular in section. It probably belonged to a suspended manicure set; there is a perforation for suspension at the end opposite the scoop. The stem is perpendicular to the angle of the loop; it is wide and flat and tapers to 2.71mm just before the bowl of the shallow concave scoop which measures 3.63mm in diameter.

A post-medieval silver ear-scoop with a partially twisted stem leading to the scoop and a plain, pointed terminal at the other end probably fashioned for use as a toothpick. The implement is of a very white silver alloy and has no firm diagnostic features to suggest that it is any older than three hundred years of age.

Medieval cosmetic tool; cast copper alloy ear scoop of 14th century date. The implement is of a band of copper alloy, approximately circular in cross-section and twisted along the length of its middle section, presumably for decorative purposes. It is then flattened at both ends. One end is complete, and has been dished to form a tiny spoon bowl, probably for use as an ear scoop. The other end is flat and expands but has been broken off so its precise form cannot now be seen. It is quite common for these items to have a pointed nail cleaner at the other end from the ear scoop but the b…

A cast silver ear scoop, probably of late Medieval-early post-Medieval date. JP Robinson of the BM writes: A Medieval cosmetic implement, which takes the form of a combined ear-scoop and toothpick. It consists of a roughly square-sectioned shaft, which tapers to a pointed end. At the other end a collar of transverse grooves marks the separation of the ear-scoop, which has a triangular-shaped recess. The implement is silver-gilt and dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century.

Post medieval silver cosmetic implement, 75mm long and 5mm wide. The object is formed from a single sheet of silver with decorative edges. It has a small circular bowl at one end. Silver ear scoop, bodkin shaped with scoop at one end, baluster-shaped central section and pointed end, flat section. Very thin silver sheet, so perhaps protected in a case with other toilet implements? There is no sign of an attachment loop or hinge linking this object to others in a set. Probably 17th Century.

A Medieval silver ear scoop and toothpick. The stem of the implement is hexagonal in section, tapering to a blunt point at one terminal, forming the toothpick. The opposite terminal is shaped into a small, shallow bowl forming the ear scoop. The only decoration on the artefact is a pair of perpendicular grooves above the ear scoop, on the outer face and sides of the stem.

Medieval cast copper-alloy combined earscoop and strap-end. The attachment end is trapezoidal, with a cast front plate and sides forming a hollow recess for the strap, and a single copper-alloy rivet (heads flush both sides) in the centre of the wider end retainings a sheet backplate on the reverse. The attachment end tapers slightly, and at the narrower end is a long terminal ending in an animal head with an earscoop protruding from the mouth. The animal head has a long curved neck, and the head appears to be canine with small ears, curved groove at the brows/cheeks, drilled eyes, a…

Silver toothpick and ear-scoop. The toothpick is cast in the form of a triangular-sectioned bird's talon (now bent and distorted with point missing) emerging from the fleshy part of the claw which is decorated with tiny stamped annulets. This in turn emerges from acanthus leaves with a collared moulding just beyond the mid-point, from which springs the oval-sectioned shaft of the ear-scoop. There is a circular pierced lug in the centre of the upper edge containing a silver wire loop (10mm). The underside of the shank for the scoop, adjacent to the circular bowl, is stamped with a coun…

Copper alloy Ear Scoop, as identified by finder. Cast near-flat spoon with a tapering handle (other end lost), with an incised triangle on/in the bowl and horizontal hatching affording grip on the handle. A central dimple is impressed on the underside of the bowl, showing as a faint mark on the decorated side. Bent in the same plane.
