Early Medieval mount; Anglo-Saxon mount with Style 1 beasts, dating to the 6th or early 7th century; Cast copper alloy mount with gilded openwork sections. Mount is sub-rectangular with crossing, relief-moulded lines sectioning it into triangular sections. The crossing point of these lines is off-set, giving differing sizes to the resulting sections. The largest section is undecorated but has a possible remnant of solder present, which may indicate that something else was once attached, potentially a silver appliqué, in the Bichrome Style. The small section (diagonally opposite the l…

Part of a cast copper-alloy figurative mount, probably depicting a saint. The mount would have been attached to a Limoges crucifix, casket or chasse. The preserved fragment comprises a stylised head and the upper part of the torso. The body of the figure is convex, and retains traces of decoration that may relate to the rendering of clothing. The neck is short and narrow, and the head sub-oval in profile, with a flat top. Facial detail is rudimentary, consisting simply of two small eyes (probably metal pins); any further features are now lost. Height 27.9mm; greatest width (at shoulder…

A corroded copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of post-medieval date. A parallel for this piece is illustrated by Brian Read in his book "Metal artefacts of antiquity" (2001; pp. 29; no. 336). Mounts with two integral rivets are generally thought to be 17th century in date. The plate takes the form of an openwork fleur-de-lis. A central spike protrudes upwards from between the two openwork loops and, underneath, three pointed lobes project from below a horizontal band comprising two grooves and a central ridge. On the reverse are two integral rivets. The rivet is ben…

A corroded copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of probable 17th century AD date. The form of this piece is of interest as it appears to depict the 'Green Man', a common Pagan symbol which is also well represented in medieval and later ecclesiastical contexts. The mount is sub-rectangular in form, having elaborate cast surface detail. At the centre is a male face, with facial features clearly moulded. Foliate decoration is depicted as emanating from the wide open mouth and a similar tri-foliate protrusion extends upwards from the top of the head. Separating the face f…
