Medieval buckle; Cast copper alloy single loop buckle with openwork design incorporating two 3-dimensional beasts in relief. Buckle has a D-shaped frame which widens and deepens towards the back of the frame to give a broad, concave, 3-dimensional cross section. This is decorated in openwork moulding with two opposing beasts, possibly dogs, standing chest to chest but with both heads facing forwards. The pin bar is recessed, narrow and circular in cross section. The pin is missing but would have touched the buckle frame between the heads of the two beasts. Dated to the late 11th or 12t…

The frame has been drilled to allow for a central iron axis bar through which the pin and strap-end would be fixed. The iron axis bar is missing has been lost – presumably through corrosion as large amounts of concreted orange (iron) corrosion is present on the frame close to the drilled holes. The frame of the buckle is decorated with a series of motifs. Either side of the drilled holes at the mid p…

A bent, corroded and incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate, probably originally from a single-loop buckle. Buckle plates with heraldic animal designs are thought to be a product of the 13th century AD. Similar examples (although clearly depicting lions) have been found in excavations in London (see G. Egan and F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 111, no.500) and in Norwich (S. Margeson; 1985; pp. 204-5, no. 8). Only the upper plate remains, the rear plate having been broken off at the frame end, where there are two projecting tabs either side of a pin slot. The design, which occupies the entire…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy double looped (spectacle) buckle of post-medieval date (1600-1750). The fragment is from one end of the frame; the rest of the frame and pin are missing. The extant fragment consists of a decorated pin-rest and a series of floral (rose) decorations. A silvered / tin surface has been applied to the front face of the frame. Incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1600-1750). The buckle frame is incomplete being broken into two parts across one of the loops. This break is relatively fresh and unabraded, probably being caused by movement in the ploughsoil. Originally in plan the buckle would have been sub-oval with a slight central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is present but detached. It is formed from a single length of tapered copper alloy which has been bent around the central axis bar. The upper surface of the pin has been decorated with …
