A copper-alloy Roman coin (as?) of Gordian III (AD 238-244), dating to the period AD 238-244 (Reece period 11). NIKAI reverse type depicting the legend between four standards, two Capricorns above the central two standards. Mint of Nicaea (Bithynia). Cf. SNG Österreich Sammlung Leypold, Band I: Pontus-Lydien, pp. 38-39, no. 189. This is an Eastern mint coin, probably an as or similar denomination, of Gordian III, the first of this type to be recorded through the PAS and very unusual for Britain.
