An incomplete Bronze Age cast copper-alloy razor of Piggott’s Class I dating c. 1600-1000 BC. The blade, which is bent slightly out of shape, is tongue-shaped and flat lozenge-sectioned. The point is rounded and broken. The blade edges gently flare to rounded shoulders before narrowing into a rectangular tang. On one edge of the tang is an irregularly shaped projection. There is no decoration on either face or on any of the other surfaces. The entire object is worn and abraded, including the blade edges, which are damaged in several places. The patina across the surfaces is dark…

A triangular copper alloy fragment which is flat, with a round loop at the apex and an irregular oval aperture at the centre, which may be a casting flaw. The fragment tapers in thickness to the wider end, which has broken across its width. Possibly from a later Bronze Age to early Iron Age 'Hallstatt' razor of Type Unterstall or Poiseul. See CORN-D78C78 for a whole example of the type.

An incomplete copper alloy Middle to Late Bronze Age leaf-shaped, double edged tanged razor dating to circa 1500-800 BC. The razor has a low oval cross-section with tapered blades on either side both of which as convex in profile. Projecting from the rear is a flat tang with concave edges that lead to a single trunnion-like projection on the side of the object, the projection on the other side is no longer present. This razor is most similar to a Piggott (1946) Class I double-edged razor, or possibly a Hodges (1956) as Class IV. Dimensions: Length 79.4mm, Width 28.0mm, Thicknes…

A Roman copper alloy knife or razor handle in the form of a three-dimensional left leg and foot (c. AD 43 - 410). The foot is wearing a sandal rendered as ribbed moulding running down the centre of the foot, encircling the ankle and on either side of it, extending to a flat sole cushioning the foot. The foot appears to be wearing a sock represented by an incised herringbone design. This design may represent a garment made by nalbinding rather than knitted. The herringbone pattern continues up the leg, covering the calf and terminates in a notched circumferential moulding. This mou…

A copper alloy blade, probably a razor of the Bronze Age period. It is an elongated leaf shape, possibly too narrow for a razor, but there is no suggestion of any attachment that would signal a spearhead. It is rounded at one end and the other is a sharp point. Both edges have also been sharp at some point. Both sides have a narrow mid rib running along them. It is bent up at each end, and is badly delaminated but otherwise complete, the remaining original surface has an even brown patina. NLM-C12997 has the two mid ribs, and YORYM-B9DF57 is a similar shape. Both of these are…

A fragment of a possible Bronze Age copper-alloy razor dating to circa 1400-800 BC. The extant piece is rectangular in plan with a slightly curved profile.  It terminates in old, worn breaks along each edge. At one end is a circular perforation 2.1mm in diameter. Adjacent to the perforation, one face shows evidence for a small, not penetrated, drilled circular hole 1.7mm in diameter. It has a dark green patina. The patina of the object is consistent with Bronze Age metalwork although the weight is light and might indicate a more Medieval date. The perforation is consistent with s…

A copper alloy 'Hallstatt' razor dating from the Lyn Fawr phase of the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age (c. 800 - 600 BC). The razor is a concave trapezoid in plan, there are two suspension loops with a crescent shaped strengthening bar or rib beneath them, extending beyond the edges of the blade. The rib suggests this is Unterstall or Poiseul type, although lacking the decorative perforations. Undecorated razors with trapezoidal blades, such as that described in record LVPL-EE11C2 are attributed to Type Endingen (Jockenhovel 1980: 1…

A  copper-alloy leaf shaped razor or knife dating to the Middle Bronze Age c. 2150-1500 BC. The leaf shaped blade is lenticular in cross-section. One surface is almost flat and the other slightly convex possibly with the remains of a midrib. The tang appears  to be rectangular in cross section. The object is covered in pale green corrosion. The tang would have held the original wood, bone or antler handle in place. The cutting edges run the length of each side of the leaf shaped blade but are blunted with slight damage along the s…

A fragment of a probable middle to late Bronze Age copper-alloy, probably double-edged, leaf-shaped razor. Only a section of the tang end survives. This has a pointed-oval cross-section and a straight, abrupt break across its inner end. Each side curves outwards gently and the remains of a small, flattened, rectangular tang projects from the centre of the outer end. Both edges appear to have been sharpened to form blades, but are heavily damaged and corroded, obscuring this to some degree. Uncertain class due to its fragmentary condition, but see PAS record&nb…
