An incomplete ceramic object, possibly a loom weight for a warp weighted loom of uncertain date, probably Roman to Medieval, c.AD 43 - 1300.  The weight has a dark orange fabric with large white, possibly calcite inclusions. It is C-shaped with a sub-ovate section and worn breaks to each end. One surface is flat, the other rounded. There is a partial sub-circular off-centre perforation of approximately 8.3mm diameter. The object is 61.1mm long, 27.8mm wide, 23.6mm thick and weighs 64.2g. Loomweights tend to weigh between 150g and 550g. Accounting for the loss of over half of the…

A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy probable loom weight dating to circa AD 1200-1800. The object is cylindrical with flat faces. There is a central, circular perforation through the object.  The object is undecorated. The metal has a dark grey patina.  Lead weights are difficult to date securely or assign to specific tasks without archaeological context, as they change very little and thus a wide date range is suggested.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Post Medieval lead alloy loom weight. It is ring like in plan and sub oval in section. The inner perforation has an approximate diameter of 13mm. Deep grooves have been worn by the thread on the inner edge one side of the weight. On the other side the outer edge has been 'mushroomed' by repeated impacts with the floor when the thread was being woven into cloth. Hard to date as this is not a mass produced item and may have been of comparitevly recent manufacture by a hand loom weaver or as a replacement in a commercial mill. Probably dates to between c1600 and c1900 AD. Diameter 3…

A complete lead, or lead alloy, probable Loom Weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the loom weight is circular. There is a circular perforation which is 8.61mm in diameter in the centre of the weight. One face of the object is slightly domed. The other is flat and the perforation is expanded on this side and is 10.25mm in diameter. The metal is light brown in colour and has a slightly pitted patina. Loom weights and spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods. Howev…

An incomplete cast lead-alloy probably Roman to Medieval loom weight, dating to AD 43-1450. It is circular in plan with as central sub-cylindrical perforation, which has traces of recessing on its inner face, probably due to use. The sides of the loomweight are convex. The front and back faces are damaged. The second hypothesis is that the object is a spindle whorl of the same period range. Diameter: 31.66 mm Thickness:13.54 mm Height: 16.46 mm Weight: 57.94 g

A complete lead or lead alloy weight, possibly a loom weight or spindle whorl. The date is uncertain though probably of the Roman to Post Medieval period (AD 43 - AD 1900). The object is cylindrical with a broadly oval perforation through the object to allow attachment. The base has been flattened slightly which could possibly be the result of trimming the weight or cutting the weight from a larger piece. The flattened base allows the weight to stand. There is evidence of some post depositional damage in the form of indentations, pitting and scratches on the surface of the ob…
