Asymmetrical laurel leaf point or knife, made from a thick, elongated primary of secondary flake of off-white patinated flint with patches of rusty iron oxide stains to both faces. The ventral face is largely unaltered from its fairly flat bulbar surface, a few flake scars around the periphery are evident, one has been struck quite deeply to one side of the “point”. The dorsal face has the most flake scars; struck towards the centreline with the straighter of the two lateral edges being the more invasive and lower angled, this probably is the main cutting edge, the more cur…

Laurel leaf point made from a semi-bifacially knapped, hard hammer struck flake as a blank, of pale to mid-grey banded flint with a dark “wash” patination, collecting in the recesses. The dorsal face is worked by direct percussion to form a leaf point, the flakes have run a little short to overlap down the middle, leaving the blanks original surface running down the centre, two flake scars to the side have hinged terminations, the ventral face retains part of the underside of the blanks original unmodified flat surface toward the point and to half way down the point, it is …

Small, invasively and bifacially knapped ovate, of unpatinated mottled dark grey flint with thin, grey cortex with slight rusty iron scrapes extant to the dorsal face only, all flake scars appear to be semi-hard hammer struck. The symmetry is good overall, giving a thinner section, and lower angle edges towards the “point”, this would suggest the point is the main cutting edge. Butler, C. (2005) lists similar objects as Laurel Leaves and suggests use as a small bifacial knife, some with pressure flaked finishes to the surfaces, though this is lacking on this example.

A fragment of a flint Neolithic probable laurel leaf knife dating from 4000 BC - 2200 BC. The knife is formed on a bifacially worked fire crazed flint which is patinated to white and crazed. Both ends are broken, leaving only a fragment from the centre of the knife. The cross-section is a pointed oval. The faces are covered with scaled low angle retouch. The fragment is 24.4mm long, 32.4mm wide and 9.7mm thick. 9.7g.

A complete flint 'laurel leaf' knife of early Neolithic date. It is ovoid in shape with a flattened, pointed-oval cross-section, but is slightly asymmetrical in shape. The flint is a mottled mid- to light grey-brown with limited surface patination and some very limited orange staining in places. Covering, low angle retouch on both faces, which appears to have been struck with a soft hammer, removing all traces of the original blank flake.
'Laurel leaves' appear to have been used as knives, perhaps with the addition of a wooden handle, as their asymmetrical f…

A complete flint laurel leaf dating to the early/middle Neolithic period c. 4000-2500 BC.
The object has been formed from a secondary flake of pale grey, semi-translucent flint with dark grey areas. The tool is lenticular in plan and cross-section. The retouch on one face is scaled and invasive with some semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch along one edge. There is a small area of cortex remaining at each point which is creamy buff in colour. A flint knife or point made from a tertiary flake of mottled light grey flint, 55.1mm in length, which has been bifacially worked around the tip and sides. The dorsal surface has a large removal scar at the proximal end, with the distal tip being thicker, with a lenticular cross section and worked all around with scaled intrusive retouch.
Whilst the proportions of this knife look like a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knife, this object has been flaked on both faces suggesting it is an early Neolithic laurel leaf. Butler (2005: 130) states that it is not clear w…

Laurel leaf, fully bifacially flaked with invasive soft hammer struck flake scars, confidently struck with the terminations overlapping at, and beyond the centre line, effectively thinning the biface, only a few flakes are slightly hinged, the edges may be further refined by pressure flaking/small direct percussion. The flint is of mottled light grey colour, now patinated slightly white with spotty iron stains to both faces from contact with iron agricultural machinery/other ferrous contaminants.
The lateral cutting edges are quite symmetrical, tapering neatly towards both ends, …

Small, sub-pointed-oval biface, of mid-grey/brown flint now lightly patinated with a further brown tinge, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck and invasive, all surfaces have been modified by flake removals, no trace of the “blank” from which this was made remain, though it is likely it stated off as a large struck flake or a small, flat nodule of flint.
The flakes are confidently struck with only the occasional slight hinge terminations to the scars. The shape is intentionally slightly asymmetrical, one side of the base has two slight hollows, perhaps to aid haft…

Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, probable laurel leaf knife. An oval flake with its dorsal side side covered by a fine buff patina perhaps acquired during water-rolling on the seashore, and the other bearing a dense white patina indicating long exposure to a calcareous environment, and with a cavity from an inclusion or fossil [now lost]. The dorsal side is trimmed by short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and following one long curving edge. Apparently similar chips on the ventral side, however, are probably adventitious impact damage. A long period m…

Pale grey-buff flint possible laurel leaf knife fragment. One curved or ogival end from a flat to lentoid section blade, with covering angled long scalar retouch across the dorsal side with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following its edge, and with an undulating ventral surface; perhaps two thirds or more of the putative blade are lost. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object subsequently endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

A complete flint laurel leaf dating to the early Neolithic period (c. 4000-2500 BC to 1200 BC). The object has been formed from a secondary flake of dark grey, semi-translucent flint. The remaining cortex is reddish-brown in colour. The tool is asymmetric, sub-lentoid in plan and roughly D-shaped in cross-section. The retouch across both faces is scaled and invasive becoming semi-abrupt to abrupt along cutting edges on opposing faces. The striking platform appears to be along the right hand edge of the ventral face with the ripples of percussion disappearing into the cortex.

A complete flint Laurel leaf 'knife' of Neolithic date (3,450-2,100 BC). The lithic is leaf shaped in plan and bi-convex in section. The dorsal surface has invasive stepped flaking with the exception of one area of retained cortex along the proximal left hand edge and proximal edge. All edges have semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface has covering parallel flaking. The lithic retains a minor amount of cortex and is therefore a secondary flake.
The flint is a dark grey in colour while the cortex is light brown.
