An incomplete Post Medieval copper-alloy handle from a knife dating to circa AD 1600-1650. Cast in two pieces, the extant element consists of a moulded male figure wearing a hat and playing a bagpipe. The figure surmounts a rectangular-sectioned socket which terminates in an old break. Both faces of the socket are decorated with a foliate design which is now heavily barded.
A similar more complete example is recorded under NMS-03A28B highlighting that the foliate design on the socket faces would have been inlaid with enamel. Other examples recorded on the database include B…

A complete copper-alloy post-medieval knife handle terminal. The terminal is shaped like an horse's hoof and has iron corrosion. It curves downwards slightly at an angle and has a flat outer end. The inner surface is covered with iron corrosion where it would have joined the iron tang of a knife originally.
A number of similar example have now been recorded with the PAS: e.g. SF-6B23D0, NLM-61F60B, SUR-1DCA47, IOW-E044C2, SOM-A63564 and LVPL-2ABAE1.
Egan (2005, 93, no.398) illustrates a similar example from a 15th to 16th century excavated context in London.

A cast copper-alloy knife end cap of Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in profile and oval shaped in section with moulded vertical ridges down each side. Both faces have incised decoration comprising a rectangular border containing a cross saltire, the edges suffering from corrosive copper-alloy and iron products. An incomplete copper-alloy Roman knife handle. Rectangular in shape with a waisted centre, it is narrower at the terminal which ends in a rectangular knop. Decorated with transverse mouldings and grooves. The incomplete terminal has the remains of corded iron surviving which may be an iron blade from a small knife. It is 24.33mm in length, 13.62mm in width and 6.82g in weight.
There are no similar examples of this form on PAS.

A cast copper alloy Post Medieval end cap from a scale tang knife dating to the 16th century. The end cap consists of a pair of conjoined (addorsed) horse hooves facing away from each other. The hooves are oval in cross section and separated by a groove. Another groove extends around the base of the cap separating it from a ridged border at the handle of the knife. The base terminal of the end cap has a slot filled with the corroded remnants of a rectangular-sectioned iron blade scale tang.

The object consists of the socket and the upper portion of the blade. The socket is oval in shape with incomplete walls. The base of the socket presents a traverse step before extending into the blade. The blade is rectangular in form with a shallow lozenge-shaped section. It terminates with a worn break. The object has a dark brown patina with patches of bright green.

This terminal is likely to have come from an iron scale tang knife. It starts at a rectangular base and then forms into two parallel curved arms, which then connect by a small bar at the top of the terminal. The shape of the object is very similar to a lyre. Each hoof is sub-oval in cross-section with a short projection on the outer edge. Where the hoofs conversge is a sgort groove. The outer sides curve inwardly to the base. The base has a slot filled with corroded rectangualr-sectioned iron blade.

A cast copper-alloy knife blade or spear head fragment of unknown date, possibly the Bronze Age, c.BC 1600-1100 through to the Medieval period (c. AD 1600).
This metal fragment would have been part of a leaf shaped blade, however it has been broken off on three sides. It is sub-rectangular in body while having a rhomboidal cross-section mid-ridge. The only surviving original edge is of the bladed edge.
The object measures 15.99mm in width and 13.33mm in length and is 5.72mm wide. It weighs 2.56 grams.
It is dark green in colour and pitted.
