An almost complete iron hipposandal (a Roman horseshoe) dating to the Roman period, from about AD 43 to 410. The object consists of a foot plate of similar shape to a human footprint, being sub-circular at the front, narrowing to the rear and then expanding again for the heel. The heel bends upwards and tapers into a outward projecting lug or hook, probably incomplete. One side of the expended heel area is missing. At the toe end, there are side wings which project sideways from the sole, then bend upwards at a right angle, before angling forwards and curving into the middle to j…

An incomplete iron hipposandal dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43 to 200. The object consists of a semi-circular plate which has a projection curving back towards the plate from the curved outer edge and a sub-rectangular plate extending from the opposing side of the plate. The face with the hook curling upwards is convex and the other is concave. The projection forms a D-shaped cross-sectioned hook which terminates in a flat surface, which is posssibly a break, although this is difficult to confidently identify due to corrosion products. The straight edge is uneven and is the resul…

The projection forms a D-shaped cross-sectioned hook which terminates in a flat surface, which is posssibly a break although this is difficult to confidently identify due to corrosion products. The straight edge is the result of an old break. The surfaces of the object are very corroded and flaky. The hipposandal measures 67.3 mm in length, 67.1 mm wide, 7.7 mm thick and weighs 53.1…

A largely complete but damaged and worn Roman iron hipposandal. The hipposandal is formed from a broadly rectangular plate which tapers towards the front and rear with four projections at the front, back and on either side. The hipposandal has a flat sole. There are two projections to the sides which are damaged and incomplete through corrosion. The surfaces of both the bottom plate and all four projections are corroded and very flaky. The heel is upturned at about 45 degrees and flares outwards. The heel would have terminated with a downward facing hook but that is now missing. The ba…

An iron hipposandal dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43 to 200. The object consists of a sub-oval plate which curves upwards at one end. The curved end is straight and has an integrally cast hook which curves downwards. At each side there are sub-rectangular projections which curves upwards at almost 90 degrees. The surface of the object is very corroded and flaky. Hipposandals have been found in several excavated contexts including at Colchester (Crummy 1983: 105) and at Bishopsgate in London which is now in the British Museum (P&EE 1871 7-14 22). Incomplete Roman iron hipposandal (a type of horseshoe). The hooked heel only remains. The plate has incurved sides with the remnants of one flared wing at one side. At the back the plate curves upwards into a flared, convex heel plate with an incomplete backward projecting hook at the mid point of the upper edge. the hook is tapering and square sectioned. Probably an Aubert/Manning type 1. For a similar, more complete example see, Crummy, N, 1983, "The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester, 1971 - 1979", Colchester Archaeological Report 2, p.105, Fig. 108. The iron is heav…

Incomplete Roman iron hipposandal. The oval plate has a curved back edge, terminating in a downward pointing hook. The front has an upward projection, which would have terminated in a loop (now missing) for attachment. To either side of the plate is a broken, sub-rectangular projection, which would have been bent towards the front projection to hold the hoof in place. The iron is heavily corroded, with fragments flaking off the surface. The plate measures 155mm in length, increasing to 185mm to take into account the projecting rear hook. It is 115.73mm wide, including the side project…
