Cast copper alloy three point tag from a surveying chain (Gunters chain). The object consists of a loop at the top (now broken); below this is the neck, which extends into a semi-circle with three ‘teeth’ at the opposite end to the loop, all in the same plane. The object is of a mid reddish-brown patina with areas of mid greyish-green.
The surveying chain was first recorded by Edmund Gunter in 1579 and the example shown would not have pre-dated 1620. The surveying chain was marked at every 10 links by tags or tallies, at 10 links a single pointed tag, at 20 links a double …
