Gold, copper alloy, glass and iron compass, as identified by the finder. A circular copper alloy case with bevelled glass lid retains a white dial plate bearing two discernible cardinal points and a rusted needle; water has infiltrated and is retained by the case. The case is set within a plain annular concavo-convex frame with opposed collared seats for attachment to a fob. Stamps on the outer side include an anchor for the Birmingham assay office. A post medieval lead alloy compass card dating AD16th - 18th century. This object is a disc with a circular central perforation for the pivot for the compass needle. On the upper surface there are four concentric rings, at different spacings. The north point is marked by a stylised fleur-de-lis engraved across the two outermost rings. The other Cardinal points are marked by triangular arrows and their halves are marked by simple lines. An incomplete copper-alloy latten medieval compass base dating to the middle of the 15th Century. The compass was discovered folded inwards upon itself to obscure the decoration, the fold was off centre. The fragment was subsequently unfolded to reveal the decoration. The compass has a circular perforation which is slightly off centre. Projecting outwards from this perforation are four incisions depicting the cardinal points. A copper alloy compass face dating from the Post Medieval or Modern period. It is a circular sheet of copper alloy, 2mm thick with the upper face inscribed with a cross of tapering arms marking the four compass points, and similar arms in the angles marking NW, SW, NE and SE. The four main compass points are decorated with foliage. The intermediate arms have half of the point shaded to give a three dimensional appearance. A slightly bent and damaged copper-alloy compass dial of late medieval date (c. 15th century). The disc has notched protrusions at the cardinal points. There is a small central perforation for a (now missing) needle. The upper surface is marked out with very finely incised lines. Identification by: Irene Szymanski. A cast copper alloy compass cover, in the shape of a well-rounded heart. The front surface has been gilded, while the reverse has not. There are three rivet holes in the edge of the cover one two-thirds of the way up each side and one at the base. The front has a border, decorated with a bow at the top and floral motifs. Around the border is the legend: ‘DER SPÖTER.SOL.NICHTS. VERACHTEN DEN ER K(ANS BESSER MACHEN). Which translates to read: ‘The scorner should not despise anything unless he can do it better himself’.
