A near complete cast copper alloy flat tanged chisel, or possibly a miniature flat axe most likely dating to the Bronze Age. In plan the chisel is narrowest at its butt end. From this point it is initially straight sided for just over half of its length before widening in a mostly linear line a presumbaly crescent blade edge which flares outwards from the side of the chisel slightly. Most of the blade of this edge is lost to an old diagonal break. The chisel is rectangular in cross section and a pointed oval in cross section. it is 2.3mm thick at its butt…

An incomplete Late Bronze Age copper alloy tanged chisel, dating to c 1150 - 850 BC. The handle and blade is missing. The chisel was cast in one piece but can be described in two sections. It has a rectangular tang in subsection which abuts the ovoid-sectioned, collared handle stop of the chisel blade. At the other end would have been the chisel blade beyond the tang. At this point there is a worn break. This artefact has a dark orange brown patina. Tanged chisels, which date from c. 1150-850 BC, are known from several hoards and as isolated finds; …

Fragment of a Bronze Age tanged chisel of Late Bronze Age date, probably of Wilburton or Ewart Park metalworking industry, dated to c. 1150 – 750BC. Only a small section of the tang survives but is clearly square in section. It flares slightly to the collar which is sub oval in form. The blade flares below this collar to give a blade width of 29.02 mm. The blade faces are near-flat and thin gradually towards the edge.  The surface is pitted with a mid-brown patina. On one side an incised line runs parrallel to the angled edge of the blade, c. 3mm from the edge. It…

An incomplete probable copper-alloy tanged chisel, or trunnion tool, likely dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1150 cal BC). It has a light green-grey patina. It probably belongs to the metalworking tradition phase VIII - IX, which corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 5; circa 1500-1150 cal. BC. In profile, you can clearly see where it has been heavily used on one edge. It is sub-rectangular in plan with the trunnions, projecting out 11.5mm and 6.5mm from the sides. However, it is missing its butt end, as there is a post-depositional break just above th…

A fragment of a socketed chisel or miniature flat axe dating from the Late Bronze Age c. 1150-800 BC. The fragment comprises a flat blade which tapers inwards as the thickness increases forming a broadly trapezoidal fragment. The fragment terminates short of full length with a worn transverse break. The fragment is hollow with the interior containing some organic material. Viewing the object towards the socket presents an elongated oval cross-section. The blade edge is fairly worn but otherwise undamaged. All the surfaces of the f…

It tapers sharply to the narrow end which is a rounded lozenge shaped in cross-section. Although it is thin at the wide working end, it is thicker towards the narrow end, possibly with slightly concave faces where it narrows. Length: 165mm; Width: 64.37mm; Thickness: 25.53mm and Weight: 566g. Manning (1976) illustrates similar chisels dated from the Roman period including page 48 item 59, d…

Incomplete small biface, likely to have been a chisel, of unpatinated glossy black and dark grey flint with a small patch of whiteish cortex to the centre of one face, the biface has broken transversely in antiquity (the broken face is glossy, not matt as would be expected for a recent break), the missing end would have presumably been the primary cutting edge, the remaining butt narrows to a point. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Small flint chisel, of light grey patinated flint, it appears to have been reshaped from a slightly larger completely ground and polished example, a very smooth remnant of the original surface remains to each face, though the rest of the surfaces are knapped to the smaller size, the lateral edges have been reground and the high points of the later flake scars are also smoothed off to some degree. One end is semi-pointed, the other is slightly squared off in plan and may represent the main cutting edge, though this chisel could well have been reversible. A much larger exa…

A complete chisel or possibly a miniature flat axe dating from the Middle to Late Bronze Age c. 1500-1150 BC. The head comprises a flat flared crescentic blade that is an elongated hexagon in cross-section. The blade edges are very worn but are otherwise undamaged. Projecting from the head is a complete gently tapering tang that terminates at a point. Behind the head the tang is lentoid in cross-section for a short portion before it transitions to sub-rectangular for most of the shaft and oval-sectioned at the point. All the surfaces of the blade and tang are relat…

A complete copper-alloy early Bronze Age probable axe-chisel (or diminutive axe). The object is a narrow, sub-triangular shape with a rounded butt and gently outwards curving narrow blade end. In profile the object is lenticular - expanding slightly towards the centre and narrowing towards each end. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded with the outer edge of the blade now entirely missing. With its small size and narrow body and cutting edge this object probably fits best into a group of objects that Needham (1996) describes as 'axe-chisels…
