The object is oval in shape with a flattened ring and an open square, possible suspension loop on the upper edge. The sides of the ring leading up to the square grow in width. At the point the sides join with the square there are a series of linear dots in at least four lines decorating both faces of the object. On the lower side of the square is a toggle-shaped projection facing into the inside of the ring. There is some chipping on the narrow part of the ring, otherwise the object is intact. The…

A complete cast copper alloy ring, possibly an Iron Age baldric ring or strap fitting. The ring is circular, with a circular section. The lower half of the ring shows signs of wear, presumably where the strap has rubbed on the metal. Attached to the upper part of the ring, on one side is a disc shaped button, it projects outwards from the ring at a right angle. The disc is largely flat, but is slightly rounded. The button is undecorated, just like the ring. The button could be a feature used to lock the ring onto a strap (as with PAS database number: SUSS-D82452, SUSS-4C9825, SU…

Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting or baldric ring, circular in profile and D-shaped in section, having a slightly flatter inner edge. The outer surface of the ring or hoop is inlaid with red glass triangles, arranged in a pattern pointing inwards from the edge, so that the alternating copper alloy spaces are triangular or diamond-shaped. The glass is the so called 'sealing wax' glass of the Iron Age, called thus because of the opaque deep red colour. It is technically known as enamel when in fact it is chips of glass inlay. The glass has undergone SEM analysis with Mary …

A mid-late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. The baldric ring is copper alloy and comprises a large hoop, which is not quite circular. Projecting (presumably) from the top of the hoop is a press-stud type fitting. Below this feature (projecting into the interior of the hoop) is a decorative feature. The feature extends down from either side of the stud and then joins below the stud (inside the hoop). This decorative feature has a concave groove pressed into it, which follows the feature, either side of the stud to whe…

A very badly worn and corroded copper-alloy baldric ring. The ring has a projection, which is broken, originating from the front surface of the main ring. The projection extends for about 6mm away from the main ring. The whole ring appears to have been cast as one piece. The projection would presumably have widened into a knob. The junction of the main ring and projection is defined by a slightly raised lozenge-shaped border. The surface of the artefact is dark green, and heavily pitted. This artefact is likely to have formed part of a baldric, the ring being the means of adjusting t…

A mid-late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. The cast copper alloy ring is very badly worn and corroded. The whole ring appears to have been cast as one piece, or alternatively wrought. The hoop is approximately 34.6mm in diameter. The ring has a projection (stud) originating from the front surface of the main hoop. The projection extends for about 8mm away from the main ring. The projection is slim at its base and then flattens out and becomes wider at its terminal (the terminal has a diameter of about 11.5mm). T…

A late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. The baldric ring is copper alloy and comprises a large hoop 33mm in diameter. The hoop is wider and thicker towards its base, at the opposite end to the other features. This end terminates with a lump of extra metal, which appears to have been decoratively chamfered. The opposite end of the artefact (probably the top) comprises a press-stud type fitting and two projecting arms. At about the 11 o' clock and 1 o' clock positions two arms extends out curving upwards away from th…

A late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. It is also possible that this ring formed part of some other attachment, probably relative to a strap or harness/ bridle fitting. An exact parallel for this piece could not be found. the ring consists of a core of iron (forming the shape of the ring). This iron ring has then been coated in a shell of high quality copper alloy, which has a shiny dark green patina. This shell has been broken open by the corrosion products and the layers of rust from the internal iron core. The …
