A medieval iron spoon auger probably dating to the 13th or 14th century. The spoon auger was used for boring or enlarging holes in wood. This example appears to be complete and may have been part of a set of varying sizes. The shaft is approximately circular in cross section and widens away upward with sloping shoulders before tapering to form a flattened, wedge-shaped tang. This would have been set transversely in a wooden handle, allowing the auger to be rotated. The U-shaped blade is formed by a concave depression in the shaft which also tapers slightly towards the rounded tip. Not…

Iron possible auger. Small wrought iron tool comprising a D-section blade, slightly flared but possibly lacking its tip, and a rectangular section tang; the object increases in width from tang to blade. The end of the tang is flattened by hammering or cutting with shears. If used to drill holes, this would be associated with furniture making or carpentry rather than the working of larger timbers. Reported together with carpentry tools and arrowheads from the same area. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length: 68.8mm, Width (blade): 7.6mm, Thickness (tang): 4.3mm, Weight: 6.79gms.

Iron possible auger. Wrought iron tool fragment comprising a plano-convex or D section blade, possibly originally U-shaped, and a long tapering tang. This is one of several tools reported together from the same location. All of which appear to have served for woodworking, probably carpentry or wheelwright's work rather than house building to judge from the modest blade sizes represented. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length: 107.5mm, Width (blade): 13.4mm, Thickness (blade): 5.6mm, Weight: 21.11gms.

A copper alloy countersink tool with a wooden handle. This tool probably dates from the Modern period, perhaps 1800 - 1950. The main body of the auger is made from copper alloy with an iron core at the cutting end. The cutting face is circular with four teeth. The cutting end is bulbous and tapers back along the shaft which is circular in section. The iron is only present in the bulbous area. Just before the tang, the shaft flares again slightly. The tang is square in section. The remains of a wooden handle are also present. This would have been a comfortable shape, circular in sectio…

An iron auger of probable post-medieval or modern date. The auger measures 199mm by 13.9mm by 9.1mm and weighs 60g. The drill bit is oval with a pointed end. The cross section of the shaft is slightly squared. It widens towards the tang, the end of which is pointed. Functional iron tools such as this are difficult to date with precision unless they are found within an archaeological context. They are more likely to be recent in date due to the usually swift deterioration of iron in the ground.

Large auger spoon bit, dating to the late 16th century to early 17th century. The auger has a round section blade shaft and a wider, wedge-shape narrowing tang for fixing in the handle in what would have been an overall T formed rotary tool. There is slight damage to the blade end.

Iron spoon auger. Spoon coming to a blunt point. Shaft has a sub-rectangular cross-section, lanceolate bit. Biddle lists a number of spoon augers in 'Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester' (1990)(p.2726, figs. 1335, 1337) but these differ slightly to this example in that the sides of the bit are either straight or slightly concave. Closer parallels are listed in Manning's 'Catalogue of the Iron Tools, Fittings and Weapons in the British Museum' (1985), (Nos. B55 & B56, Pl. 12) Iron tools such as these have changed little over the centuries and are difficult to date without a …
