A lead alloy ceiling ornament. A triple armed mount with a central attachment hole. The arms are cast with a foliate design, each terminating in a large trifoiliate leaf with raised linear detailing (each of the foils being similarly trifoliate). One leaf has been broken off The front of the mount is convex and the back has concavities behind the more pronounced elements (in particular the centres of the leaf terminals). This is likely to have been gilded originally. Geoff Egan details a similar find in "Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition" (2005, MoLAS Monograph Series…

Lead-alloy wall or ceiling mount dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c. 1500-1700. The mount was cast in the shape of a fleur-de-lis and it is quite heavy. The obverse is well-shaped, while the reverse displays multiple casting flaws. The casting seams are still intact which suggests that this item came straight from the mould and was never re-worked and used as a ceiling/wall mount. There is a large central perforation with which it would have been attached to wall or ceiling, but this is also flawed which is why it may have been rejected.

This is a small limestone respond column capital - made to sit up against a wall as a decorative feature in a church or monastery. The circular pattern is known as 'water holding' as its hollow surface would have been capable of holding water, but this is a descriptive term rather than relating to a real function. The design of the leaves under the column peak is known as a flat-leaf capital. This style of capital was a popular feature of Gothic architecture and dates to the late 12th – 13th century. The capital measures 127.07mm in length and has a maximum width of 148.06mm. The …

Three fragments of limestone flooring. One surface of each fragment is smooth probably as a result of both purposeful smoothing and also from wear. The fragments do not appear to have been part of large slabs, but smaller fragments, rocks and pebbles that have been laid to form either a floor (internal) or pavement (external).

Incomplete Medieval lead wall or ceiling decoration, in form of a sun or star with seven curving rays, broken, the outer edge is missing. >18 x >26mm. Gilded lead stars were attached to interior walls and ceilings, although there is no obvious trace of gilding or means of attachment surviving on this example (Egan (1998) The Medieval Household, 61-2 and Salisbury Mus. A cast lead object, possibly a vent cover from a brick vent or a window. The object is decoratively moulded in an openworked lattice. It is probably post-medieval in date. The vent was circular, it was then folded in half and then half again. So it appears as a quarter circle.

Large fragment of architectural stonework probably dating from the Post Medieval - Early Modern period circa 1550 – 1900 AD. The fragment is carved from local red sandstone dating from the Permian / Triassic period. The source of the sandstone is likely to be the Bridgnorth sandstone formation and many buildings in North Shropshire are constructed from it. The fragment is incomplete and the edges of the design have been abraded and affected by frost action. The piece has been carved from one single piece / block of sandstone and is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross se…

A large fragment of a possible ceramic building material. The fragment is an irregular shaped fragment of fired clay which is possibly fired remnants of wattle and daub walls (being the daub part). The reasons for this are the organic impressions and a shallow U shaped sectioned hollows; these may correspond with the wattle hurdles in a wall. The fragment is 23.02mm thick and weighs 56.7g. It is 67.32mm long and 49.92mm wide. The fragment consists of a fabric is similar to that published as GR2 (fine grog/clay pellet with some leached shell) in McSloy 2007, p 25, dated to…

Carved architectural element / corbel carved as a stone head of probable medieval date (1200 - 1550). The stone head is carved from a block of light yellow - cream coloured limestone or possibly a very fine grained sandstone. A small area has an orange coloured iron staining probably due to the nature of the burial environment. There are also a number of brown coloured areas of mortar adhering to the face of the carving. The stone head has been reused, but was at one point buried. It is currently mortared over a doorway of a brick barn, probably built in the 1850’s to the model farm …

Cast lead-alloy scallop mount, gilded. Being a scallop it maybe have been an architectural element of, e.g. a church or another religious building or garden. It was probably mounted on a staff or similar, which is now broken off and missing. Much of the gilding is still intact, but lead casting was not very inspired since the casting seams are still visible around the mount.

Carved stone head found by a gardener on the grounds of Clitheroe Castle. The head is quite small and incomplete. It probably displays a gargoyle, ape-like monster or bat. It has big ears and protruding eyes suggesting that both needed to be seen from far below. The snout is missing, but most of the fan-shaped crest is still intact. It does not appear to have been cut completely symmetrical; maybe it was meant to display a creature in motion or movement? A flat reverse and a hole suggest that it was propped up or attached with/to an iron bar. Furthermore, there are remains of concrete …
