A heavily abraded fragment of a Roman mortarium. The fragment has a hard fired sand-tempered fabric with oxidised reddish exterior and a reduced grey core. One side (the inside surface) has sub angular and sub rounded flint clasts embedded onto it to create a grinding surface.

A fragment of a ceramic mortarium of Roman date, c. AD 200-410. The fragment is a rim sherd of a Roman mortarium. The rim is upturned, double flanged, and forms an exterior edge which is decorated with at least four narrow grooves. The fabric is severely abraded on all faces and is a heavily sand-tempered reduced grey ware. A sherd of a ceramic mortarium of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The sherd is sub-rectangular in plan and consists of a part of the rim, part of the concave bowl, part of the foot ring, and part of the funnel. At the top of the object, there are remnants of the rim, with part of the rim bent back upon itself to form the funnel. The section of the rim has a largely sub-triangular cross section and is 7.83mm thick near the base of the rim and tapers toward a rounded point, though large sections of the rim have been broken. A rim sherd fragment from a Roman probably East Gaulish (Trier) samian ware mortarium Form Dragendorff 45 dating to the first half or middle of the 3rd century. This is a fragment of a Drag. 45 mortarium with a nearly upright wall. Oxidised fabric with reduced core and very frequent black trituration grits to length 9mm on its inner surface which suggest its origin in a mortarium or food-preparation vessel with a surface apt to grinding. Black inclusions often point to fabric made in the Coal Measures area, though none of the characteristic black grits are incorporated in the fabric of the body. A Roman Mancetter-Hartshill Whiteware mortaria sherd, dating to AD 100 - 410. A body sherd, the fabric is cream in colour with the inner surface containing dark brown/black grit inclusions. The outer surface has circumferential bands visible, most likely an indicator of a wheel thrown vessel.  Length: 75.6 mm Width: 57.6 mm Thickness: 15.3 mm Weight: 74.9 g The sherd was possibly made at Mancetter, Warwickshire. Mortaria from Mancetter dates to the 2nd to 4th centuries (Tyers, P. 1996 'Roman Pottery in Britain' Routledge; p.123).

The ceramic has an oxidised dark grey core, with small inclusions and lighter grey outer surface. The outer surface is undecorated .The internal surface is stamped with BRVSC[...]. This stamp is possibly assosiated with Bruccius, a known maker in Verulamium between AD 80 - 130. Wheel made.
