Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a post-medieval strap or harness junction. It seems to have been originally composed of two loops, one probably oval and the other perhaps polygonal, arranged on perpendicular planes and joined by a solid elongated spheroid which tapers in transverse cross-sectional diameter toward one end. This joining element is extant and complete. A short remnant of the probably oval loop, circular in cross-section, extends from the narrow end and terminates in a worn break at each end. The possibly polygonal loop survives as a pair of short oval-cross-sectioned bars that project from o…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Bow and a short length of the stem of a medieval copper-alloy rotary key. The bow is a lozengiform frame of sub-circular cross-section, with a fully-rounded knob at each of three corners. The stem projects from the fourth corner, beginning with an expanded sub-circular to octagonal cross-sectioned  collar. The collar expands in diameter convexly for two thirds of its length and then steps down radially by about one millimetre, remaining parallel-sided for the final third before stepping down another millimetre onto the stem itself. The convexly expanding part is decorated wit…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy bow brooch, perhaps a cruciform of Martin’s (2015) type 3. The headplate is roughly rectangular, although all of its edges are now heavily abraded and some parts are certainly worn breaks. There is a flat square panel on the front (raised a fraction of a millimetre), slightly wider than the bow and aligned with the lower edge of the headplate. The panel is decorated along the top and one lateral edge with a line of punched crescent-shaped marks. None are visible on the opposite edge, where the surface of the metal is more corroded.  …

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete post-medieval lead-alloy spoon. Around fifty per cent of the bowl is missing to an irregular worn break. The base is fairly flat but slopes up toward the curved (non-broken) edges on the stem side. however, the bowl has been distorted and may originally have been more dished. One part of the edge is folded and doubled forward. The stem may also be incomplete. It is short and there is certainly a worn break at the end but this may affect just a corner. Elsewhere, the end is roughly rounded. The stem is trapezoidal in cross-section, with the wider face at the top (corres…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified copper-alloy object of probable Bronze Age to Roman date. Perhaps it is a distorted awl. It is a rod, bent in two or three places with a total (unbent) length of 70mm. It is flatter and thinner at one end (4.5 x 1.7mm) and gradually becomes thicker and narrower, more rounded in cross-section, toward the other end, while maintaining two opposing flat or near-flat faces. This end is sub-square in cross-section, rounded at the very tip (diameter: 2.7mm) and may be a well-worn break. Two of the bends occur near the middle. Neither are very far from right-angles, one acute, one…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman copper-alloy Colchester derivative hinged brooch of Mackreth’s (2011) Type CD H 5.c.d. The pin is missing and the bow is slightly distorted. The condition of the surfaces is poor due to corrosion and adherence of concreted minerals. The metal is patinated dark brown all over. The wings are tubular and appear to be completely undecorated. One is slightly shorter than the other and may terminate in a worn break. It also tapers in diameter from the head to the tip, perhaps as a result of unintended compression. The seam is not visible. There is a transverse gap between the wi…

It is oval with an offset and thinned (stepped-down) bar of square cross-section and an ornate outside edge, moulded symmetrically on both faces. The outside edge has a rounded lobe at each end and a wide groove for the pin-rest in the centre. On each side the pin-rest is a transverse ridge and then a groove. Just before the lobe there is another transverse ridge followed by a wedge-shaped groove or notch. Mid-13th to 14th century. Length: 19.0mm. Width: 23.5mm. Thickness: 4.0mm…
