A silver gilt post-medieval boatswain's whistle. The whistle consists of a globular sounding chamber made in two pieces and soldered together around the middle. A tubular barrel attaches to just beneath the sounding chamber's hole. The barrel has a small loop underneath which would have been used to secure the whistle onto a cord or such like. There is a collar around either end of the barrel. There is an unidentified maker's or owner's mark on the top of the barrel which appears to be in the form of a letter 'A'. There is also a small mark on one side of the sounding chamber, possibl…

An incomplete but well preserved lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The whistle is cast in the form of a dog's head with a wide collar displaying the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog is biting on an iron pin, which presumably would have formed a suspension ring. The dog's face is well rendered however its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed although some type of hunting hound seem likely. There is traces of gilding around one eye socket. The front of the whistle has an open tube with curved lip with a (now loose) insert to direct the air th…

Copper alloy hollow cylindrical object measuring 34.5mm in length and around 13.1mm in diameter. One side is moulded into the form of a bird's head, with eyes and a beak. One end has a small prodruding fin and appears have a section broken off. The other contains a thin metal section across the diameter of the interior which may have formed the sounding part of the whistle.
This object is likely to be a post Medieval hawking whistle.

A complete dark grey zoomorphic hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy.
The whistle is cylindrical in shape with one end narrowing to a point and the other ending in a mouth piece. This mouth piece is convex on its top and has a concave recess on its underside. An attachment loop is placed on the top of the tube close to the pointed end from which the whistle would have been hung. Both the holes of the whistle are open although some soil is visible inside.
The body of the whistle is decorated in cast relief decoration making the head of a bird of prey (raptor) the p…

An incomplete lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The front of the whistle is hollow cast in the form of a dog's head, which is the only surviving element. The whistle section would have been integrally cast but is now missing due to an old break. Some examples of this type of whistle have a wide collar and the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog's face is well rendered but its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed; some type of hunting hound seem likely. Although these are usually described as hawking whistles, I suspect that they could have b…

A complete Post Medieval lead-alloy hawking whistle dating c. AD 1700-1800.
The body is cylindrical and hollow, and tapers to the extended hemispherical mouth piece. Perforating the upper centre of the body is a crescent-shape sound hole. The squared edge of the aperture extends along a decorative circumferential collar. Above the sound hole is another thicker circumferential collar. The closed end of the body is domed and extends into a circular attachment loop.
The underside of the body has compression damage. Otherwise its integrity is intact, except for surface wear and scra…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009.
The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

A fragment of a Roman to Medieval pendant whetstone. The stone is rectangular in plan and square in cross-section. At one end it is perforated by a circular hole to secure it via a thong or suspension ring to a strap or belt. The material is brown to grey in colour and is possibly a finegrained sandstone or even a form of Schist. The faces are marked with scored lines as the scars of use. Manning (1995 :261-262) notes that whetstones are very common on Roman sites, especially military ones. Likewise it is known that Vikings wore pendant whetstones from the belt. Shopland N. A…

Two cast lead weights found in close proximity. The weights are flat and circular but lack any markings or decoration. They are not closely datable. The larger weight has a diameter of 58mm, is 10.9mm thick and weighs 246.28g (equivalent to 12oz or 3/4 of a pound). The smaller weight has a diameter of 42.53mm, is 8.56mm thick and weighs 100.28g (equivalent to 4oz of 1/4 of a pound). They have been broadly dated from 1600-1800.

Eight cast lead weights. Each one is different in form, shape and weight. One is a tall conical standing weight (D.27.77mm, H.41.14mm, W.140.3g). One is a short conical shape with a central hole (D.31.92mm, H.17.62mm, w.70.3g). One is a short slightly waisted cylindrical shape (D.36.65mm, H.25mm, W.25.02g). One is a plain circular disc (D.28.92, H.6.91mm, W.41.6g). One is a circular disc with central perforation with short incisions around the edge on both faces (D.26.82mm, H.4.3mm, W.17.6mm). Complete cast lead weight of probable post-Medieval date. The weight is cylindrical in shape, plain on the base and with a stamped design on the top. The design appears to be a crown on top of something that is not entirely clear but is likely to be lettering perhaps referring to the reigning monarch or the weight of the item.
It weighs 26.7g (NB. 1 ounce = 28.35g)
Dated c.1500-1700 AD.

A rectangular lead alloy weight. The weight has an uneven but mostly convex front and a flat reverse. The reverse has randomly placed scores on the back that may be related to the object's manufacturing. A large square hole has been made through the upper portion of the weight from back to front, resulting in an uneven lip on the front.
These objects are difficult to date but the maufacturing appears crude and local - this weight may date from the Roman to early post-Medieval periods.
The weight is 47.99mm long, 37.03mm wide and is 17.74mm thick. It weighs 140.80gms.

Two small weights, the first being an oval lead alloy weight with central perforation measuring 22.07mm long with a maximum width of 18.97mm. The central hole diameter is 3.45mm and the object weighs 34.1gms.
The second weight is trapezoidal and also of lead alloy again with a central perforation. This weight is 14.48mm long, 19.96mm wide and the hole measures 3.67mm diameter. It weighs 28.00gms.
Both of these objects are either net / line or loom weights, but they may be too small for effective use as loom weights. Without strstigraphic information these weights may date from th…
