An incomplete cast lead alloy (or possibley copper alloy with high tin content) artefact, of unknown post Roman date (50 - 1800AD). The object is most probably the sprue / casrting well from the vent of a mould and theerfore attributed to casting waste / casting by-product. The object is shaped like a four sided pyramid with rounded edges. It is undecorated and light grey in colour. It has a smooth well formed patina except on some of the faces where abrasion has occured. At the top of the pyramid is a projecting cylindrical stump, this is where the runner / jet of the casting was …

Decorated Pewter button with an embossed, symmetrical pattern on its front. The pattern consists of a central circular design surrounded by repeating loops. The button is heavily abraded all around its perimeter, such that the rim is lost and the full pattern can not be determined, but it could possibly of represented a flower. The rear is plain with just the end stubs of the shank remain. Weight 2.6g, Diameter 16.9mm

A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now…

Lead alloy terminal consisting of three rounded rings in a row, increasing in diameter from a rounded point. Between the first two rings is a flat band. On the base is the scar of a shaft. In profile the artifact is slightly oval. Length 26.0mm, Width 12.8mm, Weight 13.4g Peter Reavill FLO: The top of this artefact is possibly an acorn knop and the scar at teh base is wide enough to match a stem of a post medieval lead alloy (pewter) spoon. The artefact is erroded and the surface patina unsound: this identification is very tentative.

An incomplete cast lead alloy artefact, possibly a post medieval shy-cock or a fragment from a piece of decorative horse harness. The artefact has become badly twisted and folded in the plough soil and the original form is difficult to describe. In cross section it is sub-rectangular (slightly D shaped) with bevelled edges. The reverse face is plain and undecorated - there is no evidence of attachment lugs of fixing mounts. The cast decoration on the front face consists of a linear band with a cross potent within; the external edge is formed from a serrated band of raised square shap…

A fragment of cast lead alloy, most probably from a cloth seal / bag seal of later medieval or post medieval date (1300-1600 AD). The fragment is irregular in both plan and section. In plan it is broadly sub-triangular with a large knop projecting from its lower apex. The upper section is lost through a break. The front face is decorated with a cast design comprising a stylised double border, filled with hachure. The central area is incomplete being filled with an inscription / series of letters / numbers of which only the initial letter is present: I or 1. The reverse is flat and und…

Fragment of a cast uniface lead alloy token dated to the later post medieval period (c.1600-1800). The token has a cast design of four narrow, raised, concentric rings on its upper face. The first ring is tight around the centre, the second a quarter of the way out, the third half way out and the fourth on the rim. Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The loop is complete and the whole is somewhat elliptical probably through wear (diameter 3.7mm). Along one edge of the weight a clear seam is present; when the base is viewed it is clear that this weight has been formed by rolling thick sheet and then piercing the top. A clear spiral of metal can be seen at the base. There seems to be no decoration present. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with a good rel…

Incomplete fragment of a cast lead or lead alloy weight or possibly steelyard weight of either Roman date (possibly) or late Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped (domed) in cross section. The weight is broadly conical with the remains of an iron stud projecting from the base. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been fou…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular shaped (conical) in cross section. The exterior surface is uneven and abraded; there is no evidence of cast or applied decoration. An irregular cast hole is present piercing the weight from top to bottom, it is filled with the remains of an iron rod, which presumably was looped and aided the safe keeping of the weight. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces…

Cast lead alloy artefact, possibly the front from an early button, or unusually detailed token of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1400 – 1650). The artefact is broadly D shaped in cross section and circular in plan, although the edges have been lost through abrasion. The front face is decorated with an intricate design which consists of a checker board pattern of opposing vertical and horizontal patterned squares. In each corner and at the centre of this pattern are raised bosses, collets or knops; some of which have been lost through abrasion. The reverse face is rela…

Fragment of a cast lead alloy (possibly pewter) D shaped buckle of probable later post medieval date (1650 -1750 AD). The buckle frame is incomplete, it is irregular in plan and D shaped in cross section. An integral cast pin rest is present on one face of the frame and this is flanked with detailed floral patterns. The style of this decoration suggests a post restoration date. The reverse face of the frame is plain, apart from deep incised file marks on all surface. The metal is a mid grey black colour with an uneven surface patina. The abraded edges are flaking / laminating with corr…

Cast copper alloy ‘miniature’ weight or spindle whorl of unknown date. The artefact is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. An off centre hole has been cast through the artefact; the hole has a diameter of 3.3mm. The upper and lower faces have been decorated with cast (or possible drilled) hollows or cups. These are arranged evenly around the central hole on the upper and lower surfaces, it is also possible that a further ring of these decorations runs around the rim of the weight / whorl, although these have been made indistinct through abrasion and corrosion. …

A cast lead alloy (possibly pewter) fragment from a whistle of post medieval or early modern date (1650 – 1900 although probably 19th century). The fragment consists of the lower part of the cylindrical body of the whistle and the perforated knop shaped terminal. Although crushed in cross section the whistle would have originally been oval. The outer surface is decorated with a series of cast circumferential bands which enclose the lower and end parts of the whistle. Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 – 1700). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The loop is broken, and what remains of the hole is elliptical probably through wear. Along one edge of the weight a clear seam is present, this does not seem to be part of the casting residue from a mould; instead it seems to have been deliberately cut into the surface of the metal having a distinct U shaped profile. One face seems to be both decorated and have an applied surface. The surface seems to be a co…
