Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Bronze Age copper alloy spearhead fragment of side-looped type, dating to the Taunton-Penard metalworking phases (c.1400-1100 BC) of the Middle Bronze Age. The spearhead is broken at both ends and would have been short with a flame- or leaf-shaped blade. The circular socket becomes lozenge-shaped as it defines the central rib of the blade. The remnants of both loops are present at the base of the fragment and appear slight with a circular section.

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of unusual design, probably a derivative of a Headstud type and dating to the early 2nd century AD. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by lateral lugs at the end of very short wings, which would not have protruded much beyond the head. At the head is the remnant of a flat plate, possibly from a chain loop. The head is comparatively long and has a sub-rectangular section. The only decoration on the head is a short rectangular cast rib and a moulded oval at the junction with the bow, in place of the headstud. The Bow is at a right angle to the he…

Cast and wrought copper alloy open bracelet probably dating to either the Roman period or the late medieval / post-medieval periods (100-450 or 1450-1650 AD). The bracelet is formed from three lengths of oval sectioned copper alloy wire twisted together to form one ‘rope like’ length. The diameter of the individual wires is 2.1mm width x 1.8mm thickness. The two terminals of the bracelet are formed by joining the three ends of the wire together. The terminals are sub-rectangular and taper to rounded points. A copper alloy mount with an extensive amount of silvering surviving. The mount is oval but has been damaged and is now bent double, measuring 35.5mm long, 33.4mm wide and 19.2mm thick. The front of the mount is decorated with sinuous incised patterns, raised pellets, punched decoration and a lobed motif in relief which is unintelligible. There is a lump of copper alloy corrosion on the reverse which may be the remains of the attachment mechanism at one end of the mount; the other end is broken. The mount probably dates from the post-medieval period and may have been a harness decoration.

It has broken / cracked in one place; it is likely that this is relatively recent damage. The width of the ring is relatively uniform; on one internal edge are the partial remains of casting residue. This residue has been trimmed and filed but a distinct thickening is present. There is also an …

The fragment is a mid grey green colour with a powdery surface patina. The fragment measures 18.1mm length, 14.3mm width, is 2.5mm thick and weighs 4.15 grams

An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked button of probably post medieval or early modern date 1600-1800. The artefact comprises a cast domed fitting with a soldered length of copper alloy sheet on one edge which is folded back upon itself to form a crude hook. On the reverse face - within the concave dish, is an irregular cast loop similar to that seen on buttons of the 18th century. It is possible that this artefact was originally designed as a sword belt hook or accessory; however the loop is slight and probably could not take a significant weight. The artefact is a mid green colour …

The shaft / shank is broken and incomplete, at the junction between head and shank is a raised slight collar. The shank then tapers and expands along its length until a broken and abraded edge. The shank has a rounded square shaped cross section, with a slight swelling above the break. The metal is a mid grey colour with an eroded and poorly pr…

Fragment of a copper alloy disc with a central hole. Underneath the artefact is flat until near the central hole where it tapers in. The top slopes gently up towards the central hole before tapering into it. The disc has a dark green patina with extensive patches of lighter green corrosion. It is likely that this represents casting waste rather than an artefact. A direct parralel has not been found - however it is similar to leaded bronzes used in the Roman and later medieval periods. It is possible this is associated with medieval metalworking - such as casting metal vessels Oute…

An incomplete cast lead alloy artefact, possibly a post medieval shy-cock or a fragment from a piece of decorative horse harness. The artefact has become badly twisted and folded in the plough soil and the original form is difficult to describe. In cross section it is sub-rectangular (slightly D shaped) with bevelled edges. The reverse face is plain and undecorated - there is no evidence of attachment lugs of fixing mounts. The cast decoration on the front face consists of a linear band with a cross potent within; the external edge is formed from a serrated band of raised square shap…

A cast copper alloy bifurcated fitting of uncertain date and function. The artefact consists of a thickened shank that expands to form a cast loop. It is irregular in both plan and cross section. The head of the loop is very robust and iron staining around the fitting suggests that it held a length of iron. It is also interesting to not the different size of the holes, one being wide (4.4mm) and the other significantly smaller (2.5mm). At the junction with the loop the shank is an irregular octagon in section, tapering along the length to an oval faceted section. The broken edge is ir…

Lead alloy terminal consisting of three rounded rings in a row, increasing in diameter from a rounded point. Between the first two rings is a flat band. On the base is the scar of a shaft. In profile the artifact is slightly oval. Length 26.0mm, Width 12.8mm, Weight 13.4g Peter Reavill FLO: The top of this artefact is possibly an acorn knop and the scar at teh base is wide enough to match a stem of a post medieval lead alloy (pewter) spoon. The artefact is erroded and the surface patina unsound: this identification is very tentative.

A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now…
