Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire

A clay pipe bowl of 1630-1640. The bowl is plain with a rouletted ring below the mouth of the bowl. The clay is blottered. It does not have a makers mark. The bowl has an oval bulge measuring 19.7mm by 18.2mm.
Forward lean and shape suggest this pipe was made in Wiltshire, in particular the Salisbury area. The pipe is made of very rough clay and not well finished and probably therefore not mass produced, more for local trade. It's small size and shape do suggest an early date: 1630-1640.
The internal diameter of the bowl opening is 10.0mm.
The pipe is 29.5mm tall.

The irregular nature of the rim is probably due to knocks in the plough soil, which have also slighlty bent the weight and left a couple of gouges. The weight has a yellow grey patina all over.
The maximum diameter of the weight is51.0mm, and its maximum thickness, from the rim, is 11.2mm. It weighs 139.6g (4.92 oz).

An incomplete cast lead weight or steel yard weight.
The weight is sub-circular in plan. It is possible that the weight was suspended by this iron stud which is incomplete. The weight is a white to cream colour with a relatively even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina that covers all surfaces.
The small size and the conical nature suggest it was to be used with a steelyard and therefore be Roman in dat…
