A near complete cast copper alloy Polden Hill style bow brooch dated to the early Roman period (80-120 AD). The wings are complete being semi-cylindrical in plan, these are much abraded. A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now…

Cast copper alloy furniture fitting of post medieval date (1450-1750). The fitting is incomplete being a fragment from a drop handle (or draw pull). The plate of the handle is sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section; the edges are bevelled. The lower edge is bifurcated and curves on the reverse, two small sub-rectangular knops are positioned on the outer edge. The upper face is decorated with a raised shield shaped moulding with a ser…

Lead alloy terminal consisting of three rounded rings in a row, increasing in diameter from a rounded point. Between the first two rings is a flat band. On the base is the scar of a shaft. In profile the artifact is slightly oval. Length 26.0mm, Width 12.8mm, Weight 13.4g Peter Reavill FLO: The top of this artefact is possibly an acorn knop and the scar at teh base is wide enough to match a stem of a post medieval lead alloy (pewter) spoon. The artefact is erroded and the surface patina unsound: this identification is very tentative.

A cast copper alloy bifurcated fitting of uncertain date and function. The artefact consists of a thickened shank that expands to form a cast loop. It is irregular in both plan and cross section. The head of the loop is very robust and iron staining around the fitting suggests that it held a length of iron. It is also interesting to not the different size of the holes, one being wide (4.4mm) and the other significantly smaller (2.5mm). At the junction with the loop the shank is an irregular octagon in section, tapering along the length to an oval faceted section. The broken edge is ir…

An incomplete cast lead alloy artefact, possibly a post medieval shy-cock or a fragment from a piece of decorative horse harness. The artefact has become badly twisted and folded in the plough soil and the original form is difficult to describe. In cross section it is sub-rectangular (slightly D shaped) with bevelled edges. The reverse face is plain and undecorated - there is no evidence of attachment lugs of fixing mounts. The cast decoration on the front face consists of a linear band with a cross potent within; the external edge is formed from a serrated band of raised square shap…

Fragment of a copper alloy disc with a central hole. Underneath the artefact is flat until near the central hole where it tapers in. The top slopes gently up towards the central hole before tapering into it. The disc has a dark green patina with extensive patches of lighter green corrosion. It is likely that this represents casting waste rather than an artefact. A direct parralel has not been found - however it is similar to leaded bronzes used in the Roman and later medieval periods. It is possible this is associated with medieval metalworking - such as casting metal vessels Oute…
