A complete cast lead alloy Medieval spindle whorl. It is biconical in shape, with a circular perforation in the centre. The whorl is undecorated and grey in colour. It is 27.4mm in diameter, and 12.6mm high. The perforation is 11.0mm in diameter. It weighs 31.1g.

An incomplete, miscast of a Medieval lead spindle whorl. This artefact is sub-oval in plan, with a central piercing. The underneath is smooth, the upper side has a badly cast linear pattern. The whorl is grey in colour with a cream patina in its recesses. Its maximum diater is 37.2mm and maximum thickness 11.2mm. The hole is 6.2mm in diameter. It weighs 29.4g.

An incomplete lead alloy spindle whorl or weight (possibly). The whorl is difficult to date, Roman - Post Medieval, however the bun like nature of this example could suggest an earlier - Roman date. The whorl is in a very fragile state with extensive cracking, and one face has disintegrated. The half which survives intact is broadly flat circular in shape, if a little oval in plan, with a well rounded edge. The whorl has a green grey patina, and is grey in colour where fresh fragments have flaked off. There is no indication of decoration on the less damaged half. The body has a maxi…

A complete cast lead alloy Medieval spindle whorl. It is biconical in shape, with a circular perforation in the centre. The spindle whorl is quite worn, but on one face there are the faint remains of a raised, chevron pattern from the centre to about 3mm above. The whorl is grey in color and lacks a patina, probably due to it being an alloy. It is 30mm in diameter, and 13mm high. The perforation is 10mm in diameter. It weighs 46.2 g.

Cast copper alloy ‘miniature’ weight or spindle whorl of unknown date. The artefact is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. An off centre hole has been cast through the artefact; the hole has a diameter of 3.3mm. The upper and lower faces have been decorated with cast (or possible drilled) hollows or cups. These are arranged evenly around the central hole on the upper and lower surfaces, it is also possible that a further ring of these decorations runs around the rim of the weight / whorl, although these have been made indistinct through abrasion and corrosion. …
