Object type: FURNITURE FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy furniture fitting of post medieval date (1450-1750). The fitting is incomplete being a fragment from a drop handle (or draw pull). Only the lower section survives, the rectangular upper loop is lost and the break is relatively worn and abraded, suggesting damage in antiquity. The plate of the handle is sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section; the edges are bevelled. The lower edge is bifurcated and curves on the reverse, two small sub-rectangular knops are positioned on the outer edge. The upper face is decorated with a raised shield shaped moulding with a ser…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now…

Copper alloy fragment from a tap of post medieval or early modern date (1600-1850). The fragment consists of the lower spigot / barrel which projects into the body of the barrel. The outer edge is grooved with a series of tapering broadly parallel ridges and the interior is smooth. All the broken edges are relatively fresh being unpatinated. The fragment is a mid grey green colour with a powdery surface patina. The fragment measures 18.1mm length, 14.3mm width, is 2.5mm thick and weighs 4.15 grams

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is broadly lentoid (tear drop shaped) in plan and sub-rectangular in profile; the edges are bevelled / faceted. The front face is plain and undecorated; it is possible that it has been decorated with an applied tin surface. The reverse face of the fitting is slightly dished and irregular and also undecorated. Two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) extend from either end of the fitting. Both of these are folded over and the tips broken. These hooks would have passed through …

An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked button of probably post medieval or early modern date 1600-1800. The artefact comprises a cast domed fitting with a soldered length of copper alloy sheet on one edge which is folded back upon itself to form a crude hook. On the reverse face - within the concave dish, is an irregular cast loop similar to that seen on buttons of the 18th century. It is possible that this artefact was originally designed as a sword belt hook or accessory; however the loop is slight and probably could not take a significant weight. The artefact is a mid green colour …

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is oval in plan with two sub-circular cast knops at either end. The body of the fitting is domed (convex) in profile and D shaped in cross-section; the edges are bevelled. The overall decorative design is that of an acorn with both the nut and cup being depicted. The decoration of the nut consists of vertical incised lines, whilst that on the cup is formed from a series of incised diagonal lines forming cross hatching. Small traces of an applied tinned finish are present on the f…

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy dress hook, also known as a dress clasp or clothes fastener of lantern type (1500-1650 AD). The dress hook is made of a single piece of cast copper alloy. The reverse plate of dress hook is missing. The body of the dress hook is an elongated trapezoid in plan. In section the body is semi-circular with slide flanges. The outer face of the dress hook body has a moulded lattice / criss-cross design. There is no evidence of an applied surface / tinning, however much of the outer surface is lost through abrasion. The reverse of the body is concave with an …

A small sherd from the base or possibly handle of a glass vessel of either probably Roman date (50-450 AD) or possibly post medieval date (1550-1750). The fragment is irregular and relatively thick. It has been abraded in the ploughsoil and the edges are either chipped or abraded. An iridescent surface sheen is present. Beneath this the glass is a mid 'cobalt' blue colour with small gas / air bubbles in the matrix. The form of the vessel cannot be suggested from the fragment, if from the base it is possibly from a carinated vessel with a small out-turned foot, if it were from a handle…

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is broadly circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The ring is a mid green colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a medieval or later date. The function of the ring is varied and although it is worn a direct use cannot be attributed. The ring measures 30.6mm in diameter, is 3.5mm wide, and is 2.9mm thick…

A heavily abraded, cast copper alloy mount of unknown date (50-1800) - most probably Medieval (1200-1450). The mount is incomplete, it compromises a relatively thin incomplete quatrefoil plate from which extends a large square sectioned bar that terminates in a turned knop. The upper plate has a saltire cross formed from cast depressions on the plate and the surface seems to have been originally gilded with a white metal. The edges of the plate are heavily abraded but seem to be scalloped. The projection on the reverse is substantial .A function apart from being a decorative mount can…

The blade is broadly sub-rectangular in plan (having curved / convex and concave long edges) and oval in cross section. The presence of cortex suggests that the core is relatively new as this is usually removed in the first phases of working. An irregular cast hole is present piercing the weight from top to bottom, it is filled with the remains of an iron rod, which presumably was looped and aided the safe keeping of the weight.
