A cast lead alloy (possibly pewter) fragment from a whistle of post medieval or early modern date (1650 – 1900 although probably 19th century). The fragment consists of the lower part of the cylindrical body of the whistle and the perforated knop shaped terminal. Although crushed in cross section the whistle would have originally been oval. The outer surface is decorated with a series of cast circumferential bands which enclose the lower and end parts of the whistle. The knop shaped terminal in turned and the hole pierced through the end is 3.4mm diameter. The hole is horizontal rath…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy mount with an extensive amount of silvering surviving. The mount is oval but has been damaged and is now bent double, measuring 35.5mm long, 33.4mm wide and 19.2mm thick. The front of the mount is decorated with sinuous incised patterns, raised pellets, punched decoration and a lobed motif in relief which is unintelligible. There is a lump of copper alloy corrosion on the reverse which may be the remains of the attachment mechanism at one end of the mount; the other end is broken. The mount probably dates from the post-medieval period and may have been a harness decoration.
