Object type: RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is broadly circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The ring is a mid green colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a medieval or later date. The function of the ring is varied and although it is worn a direct use cannot be attributed.
The ring measures 30.6mm in diameter, is 3.5mm wide, and is 2.9mm thick…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast lead alloy artefact, possibly the front from an early button, or unusually detailed token of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1400 – 1650). The artefact is broadly D shaped in cross section and circular in plan, although the edges have been lost through abrasion. The front face is decorated with an intricate design which consists of a checker board pattern of opposing vertical and horizontal patterned squares. In each corner and at the centre of this pattern are raised bosses, collets or knops; some of which have been lost through abrasion. The reverse face is rela…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment probably from a locking buckle of later medieval or early post medieval date (1450-1600). The fragment consists of a small sub-rectangular bar with a clear deliberate bend. Both edges are broken; this damage is unpatinated and relatively recent. The bar itself is an irregular hexagonal shape in cross-section (with distinct faceted edges): it tapers along its length. There is no decoration present, however there are deep file marks present on several of the surfaces. The fragment is a mid green colour with a polished patina which coves all surfaces. Similar lo…

Cast copper alloy buckle frame of probable medieval date (1300 – 1500). The frame is distorted from shaped due to abrasion in the plough soil. It is broadly D shaped in plan and square in cross section. The edges of the frame are formed mostly from faceted surfaces, although these change shape around the edge of the frame so in places it appears a faceted oval. There is no restriction, axis bar or pin rest present on the frame. There is also no decoration although the frame is heavily marked my deep file marks. The metal is a mid grey green colour with a much abraded surface patina. …

Cast copper alloy sheet buckle plate of probable later medieval date (1300 – 1500). The plate is sub-rectangular in shape originally being folded in two around the axis bar of a D shaped buckle (now lost). The plate has been pierced several times, twice near the centre of the plate, and twice at the edge. The piercing near the centre consists of a single hole close to the buckle; the other is at the centre of the plate. This second hole is difficult to account for, unless it aided the fixing to another object. This second hole acts as focus for the limited decoration which consists o…

Cast copper alloy ‘miniature’ weight or spindle whorl of unknown date. The artefact is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. An off centre hole has been cast through the artefact; the hole has a diameter of 3.3mm. The upper and lower faces have been decorated with cast (or possible drilled) hollows or cups. These are arranged evenly around the central hole on the upper and lower surfaces, it is also possible that a further ring of these decorations runs around the rim of the weight / whorl, although these have been made indistinct through abrasion and corrosion. …

Incomplete fragment of a cast copper alloy suspension loop from the handle of a chafing dish of probable later Medieval or Post-Medieval date (1450 - 1600). This fragment would have attached the handle to the body of the dish. The loop is sub rectangular in plan with tapering sides and rounded terminal. At the flat end there is a cylindrical attachment knop (diameter 6.7mm); the end of this knop is broken, but patinated suggesting damage in antiquity. The suspension loop is also sub-rectangular in cross section. It has a cast hole located off centre which is oval in shape through wear…

Fragment of a cast copper suspension loop from a copper alloy vessel of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1450 - 1650). The fragment is broadly sub-triangular in plan, sub-rectangular in cross section and has a large relatively fresh break along the lower edge. The profile of the suspension loop is stepped on the inner face. At the point of the step the metal thins. The purpose of the step is most probably so that the suspension loop sat flush with the outer rim of the cauldron. Through the upper lobe of the design is a pierced hole which is positioned off centre and is we…

Fragment from a cast copper alloy rod, probably either a handle or more likely the foot of a copper alloy vessel, cauldron, posnet or skillet of later medieval or post medieval date (1300 – 1600). The bar or rod is cylindrical in shape, tapering slightly from one end to the other. The edges are also slightly faceted creating the appearance of a relatively regular spiral or twist. Both the ends are broken although the breaks are worn and patinated suggesting the damage occurred in antiquity. At each break there is a slight circumferential incised line. A similar moulded band appears c…

Cast lead alloy weight with integrally cast loop of probable medieval or post medieval date (1250 – 1700). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The loop is broken, and what remains of the hole is elliptical probably through wear. Along one edge of the weight a clear seam is present, this does not seem to be part of the casting residue from a mould; instead it seems to have been deliberately cut into the surface of the metal having a distinct U shaped profile. One face seems to be both decorated and have an applied surface. The surface seems to be a co…
