County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete iron cannon ball of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 - 1700. The cannon ball is spherical with an irregular corroded exterior surface.
Due to corrosion it may be smaller than originally made. However, its present diameter and weight may indicate that it was used in a minion cannon.
Diameter: 74.5mm (2.93 inches). Weight: 1729g (3.8lbs).
The minion was a type of smoothbore cannon used during the Tudor period and into the late 17th century.
Cast iron roundshot is rarely found on battlefields, even though records suggest that it was the normal long-range ammunition; cannon may…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Iron latchlifter dating from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period, c. 100 BC - AD 800.
Wrought iron stem with a projecting suspension hook at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar at a right-angle to the stem. The ferrous material is very corroded and damaged.
The iron has a brown patina. The latchlifter is 126.16mm in length, 29.66mm at its widest with a stem diameter of 6.58mm. It weighs 17.69g.
The bit is not of a complex form for use with a barrel padlock, so a use as a latch-lifter is suggested. The term ‘latchli…

County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete and heavily corroded iron object, possibly an awl, of uncertain date.
The object is conical, with a wide circular terminal to one end and a rounded point to the other. Due to corrosion products, it is not possible to adequately discern its original section, and it’s incompleteness also prohibits further identification.
The object is 52.6mm long, 12.9mm wide, 12.4mm thick and weighs 15.4g.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast iron trade weight with copper alloy insertion (or outer layer) of early medieval date, c. 900-1100.
This object is an oblate spheroid (flat topped sphere) trade weight with probable Viking association. Weights like this were possibly imported alongside Islamic systems of measurement and appear in excavation contexts in Scandinavia and in England. It consists of an iron core in the shape of a sphere with flattened ends.
There is a copper-alloy element in the flatter end of this object, which is possibly an insertion as coins and other objects are sometimes foun…

An incomplete iron unidentified object of a Post Medieval or Modern date (c. AD 1600-2050). The object consists of an iron bar, rectangular in section, with an integral loop in the centre through which a single link of iron chain loops through, which has bent out of shape most likely due to post depositional factors. It is likely that there would have been a series of iron chain links and that this bar would have been suspended by this means.
It's unclear exactly what this object is due to the lack of diagnostic features and also presence of heavy corrosion. It may have functioned …

An incomplete iron bridle cheekpiece dating to the medieval period (c. AD 1150-1450). The bit consists of a single shaft, with an integral central loop, and either side one terminal fanning out and the other terminal broken. The form of the bit is similar to one recognised by Ward Perkins (Museum of London 1940, 80-82 type B), as part of the 'snaffle'. This would have linked the bit to the headstall and reins by which the rider controls the horse (Clark et al, 1995).
The metal has a reddish-brown colour.
The bridle bit is 102.9mm long, 11.4mm wide and 6.2mm thick. The diamet…

Object type: FLAT IRON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Box Iron or slug iron of Post Medieval date (c. AD 1700-1900). The iron consists of a triangular shaped, solid brick of iron known as the 'slug'. The tip of the triangle has been squared off. This brick would have been heated in the fire and placed into a hollow ironing box, in order to keep the iron hot for longer, as opposed to the earlier simple 'flat irons'. This is a variation on earlier Box Irons, which were typically filled with charcoal in order to keep them hot. The development of the 'slug', allowed the ironing surface to be kept away from the charcoal and thus…

County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete iron spearhead of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1400 - 1700. The spearhead has an elongated triangular blade with slight raised mid-ribs resulting in a losengiform section. The base of the blade opens into a hollow conical socket, now filled with iron corrosion.
The spearhead is 218.9mm long, 40.1mm wide, 12mm thick and weighs 303g. The socket is 27.1mm in diameter and 4.1mm thick. It is 23.4mm deep to the corrosion product.
The welded socket is strongly suggestive of a date in the later medieval to Post-Medieval period.
