A complete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date circa AD 43-1650. The whorl is discoidal in shape and sub-rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 8.2mm. No decoration is present on either surfaces, though there are small areas of pitting seen on both sides.  The whorl is a light grey colour with a slightly uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.  Measurements: Diameter: 32mm Thickness: 6.2mm Weig…

A cast lead, or lead alloy, flat circular spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 1 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is circular. There is a circular perforation which is 9.8 mm diameter which is located in the centre of the whorl. Both faces of the object are flat and are un-decorated. The surfaces of the spindle whorl are a light cream to grey colour. The object surfaces have been worn and abraded. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods. However, this undecorated example is…

Mid grey, sandstone spindle whorl, round in plan and flat in profile, with a small perforation in the centre measuring 5.3 mm in diameter. The surface has a number of small, circular marks on both sides. Spindle holes became progressively wider from the Roman period to the 10th century (Walton Rogers, 2007, CBA Research Report). Iron Age and Romano British whorls tend to have holes of 4-8mm in diameter. Therefore this whorl could possibly date from the Romano-British to Medieval period - is difficult to confirm without supporting evidence. A similar object can be seen un…

A complete ceramic spindle whorl of probable Roman dating (AD 200 to AD 400). The spindle whorl is circular in shape with a flat cross section. The upper and lower surfaces are flat. The central hole has been set roughly centrally, and has an internal diameter of 8.0 mm. The shape of the spindle whorl would suggest that it has been specifically made and not created from a reused sherd of pottery. The spindle whorl has been made from an oxidised ceramic, with frequent fine grit inclusions. As surfaces are weathered, with no fresh break available, it is not possible to identify the s…

A stone sub-circular spindle whorl (a weight used on a spindle for spinning fibres in textile manufacture) constructed from a smooth dark grey stone. The spindle whorl is not perfectly circular and the central drilled hole is not in the very centre. The spindle whorl measures 33.54 mm in diameter and 15.32 mm thick. Its central hole is 10.1 mm in diameter. It weighs 27.4 grams. Dating spindle whorls is notoriously difficult in the absence of other chronological indicators. This example may date from as early as the Roman period (perhaps even earlier), although it is possibly later.

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 30.95 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 10.4 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, one with three lines of circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 48.7 gr…

A spindle whorl made of a rusty coloured fine grained sandstone. It is discoid in shape, with one face damaged resulting in the loss of the original surface on that side. It weighs 52.1 grams, with a diameter of 42.76mm. The central perforation is 9.93mm wide. It is 23.00mm thick. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter and thickness is even, the sides are smooth, and…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Roman - Post Medieval period, between AD 43 - 1600 (diameter: 27.5mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 32.2g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 9mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact is decorated on the conical side by three circular and concentric stepped raised platforms, which get smaller in diameter as they reach the central drilled hole at the top. The bottom of the spindle whorl is flat and undecorated. The artefact is in a …

An incomplete and probable stone spindle whorl, probably dating from the Roman-Medieval period, between AD 43 – 1540 (diameter: 45mm; thickness: 7mm; weight: 12.38g). A flat, circular probable spindle whorl with a slightly off-centre drilled hole (outside diameter: 9mm; inner diameter: 5mm), where the probable wooden spindle would have originally been placed. There is no decoration on either side of the artefact. The probable spindle whorl is in a slightly worn but fair condition.

The spindle whorl is circular in plan and in profile it is a sub-conical shape with the tip missing due to the central perforation. This perforation is 9.1mm in diameter. The 'base' of the object has a high-relief linear pattern forming a geometric star shape around the perforation. The upper surface is obliquely angled and is uneven. The object has a mid grey patina.

The spindle whorl is a bi-conical shape with a prounced ridge around the circumference of the whorl. The faces of the whorl also have high-relief ridges and pellets as decoration. The whorl has a central vertical hole which is circular in plan. The hole is 10mm in diameter. Some of the edges are slightly abraded which reveals a dark grey material which appears to corrode in layers. Otherwise the surface is a grey/cream colour.
