Object type: AXE HAMMER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Stone perforated axe-hammer of probably the very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age period, dating from c. BC 2500 - c. BC 1800. Axe-hammers are also known as Battle Axes and some of the smaller examples have been recorded as perforated maces (mace-heads). The differences between these types / classifications are uncertain and the artefact type as a whole is in need of reassessment in line with modern discoveries and approaches to artefact studies. The axe-hammer is probably formed of a fine grained sandstone. The rock has yet to be properly identified by an expert. In plan th…

A complete knapped / worked flint scraper, of Late Neolithic dating (2900 BC to 2000 BC). The scraper is broadly semi circular in plan and rectangular in cross section being formed from a tertiary flake; possibly debitage. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a series of irregular flake scars suggesting that this piece has been removed from a larger flake and been subsequently reused. The striking platform and the bulb of percussion are no longer present on the lower / ventral face, having been removed by a hinge fracture. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouch…

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dudley
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Knapped flint barbed and tange arrowhead. Probably Late Neolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. Mass: 1.5g. Length: 26mm; extant width: 17mm. Thickness: 4mm. Grey patinated flint. Made on a re-used flake, as the surface is not patinated around the edges where it has been retouched. The tanged arrowhead appears to have lost some material from its tip, and also at the ends of the wings - and so the original form is unclear.

A largely complete Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age axe hammer, fabricated from an unidentified igneous rock. In plan, the axe hammer is broadly drop shaped, with a circular perforation towards the butt. The perforation has curved sides and the circumference reduces towards its centrepoint - it is hour glass shaped. The pierced sides of the axe hammer are largely flattened although there is a marked incline around the area of the socket and the butt, particularly on one side. The edge which runs around the axe hammer is concave at the butt, becoming more straight sided towards the lo…
