Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Tertiary flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. In plan the flake is closest to a rhomboid but for a protrusion of the proximal end where the bulb of percussion is visible. In section there is minimal curvature and only little variations in thickness. The flake is of a warm-grey to brown, and conchoidal ripples are visible on both faces. There is evidence of short parallel retouching on the mesal (noticeable on the right edge when facing the dorsal face).

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper dating from the late neolithic period to the early bronze age. The shape is largely circular in plan and in section protrudes to a point on the dorsal face. The body of the scraper is largely a light grey colour, with a gradation to dark grey to the left of the ventral face (and right of the dorsal), distal end up. Very little cortex remains and is mostly found on the mesal. The dorsal face shoes long, scaled, semi-abrupt retouching. The ventral side features long ripple marks across its length which emanate from the bulb of percussion.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late neolithic to early bronze age flint thumbnail scraper. The shape is largely oval, and in section it protrudes toward the distal end. A small area of cortex is present on the dorsal face and the body is largely grey/warm brown, with an area of white on the ventral face. On the dorsal surface, there is short retouching visible on the outer rind, which in some areas appears parallel, and in other semi-parallel. The angle of retouch is semi-abrupt. The bulb of percussion is visible on the ventral face but appears quite subtle.

A complete flint button scraper dating from the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age period, circa 2500-1500BC. With the exception of some small, recent nicks, the scraper survives intact. The scraper is almost D-shaped in plan view, with a straight edge formed from the striking platform. The cross section is sub triangular with two concave sides and the other convex. Cortex is present on the striking platform. The ventral face is smooth, shiny and unworked. The bulb of percussion is clearly visibly but there is no bulbul scar or concentric ripples. The dorsal face is heavily retouched …

An incomplete flint blade dating to the Neolithic period, circa 4500-1500BC. The blade is sub-triangular in plan view and trapezoidal in section. There is damage to the proximal end of the blade, but with the exception of some small nicks, the distal end of the tertiary blade survives intact. More recent removals reveal a light grey flint beneath a mottled blue/light grey patina. The ventrical face is smooth, shiny and unworked with part of the bulb of percussion present just before the break. The dorsal face has been extensively worked and all the edges have been retouched. A complete knapped / flaked secondary debitage flake, of Neolithic dating (3100 BC to 1600 BC).
The flake is sub circular in plan, and is lentoid in section. Less than 50% of the dorsal (upper) face is covered with cortex (outer rind), indicating it is a secondary debitage flake. The dorsal (upper) face exhibits a series of ridges, and small controlled flint scars along the edges, indicating retouch. The ventral (lower) face exhibits a bulb of percussion, conchoidal ripples and a probable striking platform as evidence of working.
The flake measures 26.55 mm in length, 25.97 mm wi…

A complete knapped / flaked flint end scraper or knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 BC - 1600 BC).i
The scraper is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section, formed from a tertiary debitage flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a central ridge. The lower / ventral surface exhibits the remnants of a bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples. There are a couple of irregular and uncontrolled flake scars, suggesting movement and damage in the plough soil. The edges of the scraper demonstrate evidence of retouch with indirect percussion. A piece of chert, possibly worked. If it has been knapped from a core, it does not appear to have been retouched subsequently. The object does not have any of the clear hallmarks of human intervention - it does not have a clear bulb of percussion or striking platform. What appears at first to be retouch on the lateral edges may actually be natural damage and wear. The chert has a pale brown colour.

A knapped flint scraper of Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion and striking platform remain at the proximal end of the tool. Holding the flint with the proximal end facing the flint has had retouch applied from the dorsal face on the right lateral edge. However, it seems likely that the striking platform was used to rest the tip of the index finger on with the thumb resting on the centre of the dorsal face, allowing the worked scraper edge to be used to scrape towadrs the user. The flint is a mottled grey in colour.

A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The flint is sub-triangular in shape and resembles an arrowhead in shape. However, the flint has no invasive retouch and it retains the bulb of percussion and striking platform, a very unusual feature in Neolithic or Bronze Age arrowheads as the bulb of percussion is normally removed to facilitate hafting. The 'arrowhead' shape therefore seems likely to be coincidence rather than design. Very fine possible retouch resembling a saw blade may have been applied to both lateral edges, although it is possible that this has been caused during use …

A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible at the proximal end. There appears to be some retouch on left lateral edge and a small area on the right lateral edge. It may possibly have been used as a scraper. Whilst the flint superficially resembles that of an arrowhead the retention of the bulb of percussion and the lack of retouch on the ventral face suggests that is not one. The flint is a pale grey in colour.

A knapped flint flake of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake appears to have some retouch along both lateral edges, perhaps to form scraping edges. It has a clear bulb of percussion and bulbar scar on the ventral face at the proximal end. There are several negative scars from previous flake removal on the dorsal face. The flint is of a mottled grey colour. The tool looks as though it may have been snapped and as the break has a similar patina to the rest of the flint it seems likely that this is an ancient break rather than recent damage.

A knapped flint of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake does not appear to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. The flake is not of a good quality flint and has inconsistencies including an area of cortex. This is perhaps why it was not selected for further adaption. It is a pale grey to white in colour with an area of pale brown cortex.
