A large flint flake, probably Mesolithic, and possibly a flake removed during core rejuvenation. There appears to be negative removal scars on two sides of the flake. There are two small areas of cortex remaining on the flake, one of which occurs at what seems to have been the striking platform. There is no clear evidence for the flake having been subject to further retouch after it was removed from the core. The flint is a grey to cream in colour with areas of brown ochre. The remaining cortex is a darker brown in colour. It measures 45.7 mm in length, 23.7 mm wide, 12 mm thick and w…

A Mesolithic flint flake. The flake may have some retouch at the proximal end, although it is also possible that this is associated with prepration of the striking platform on the core prior to the knapping of the flake. There appears not to be any further evidence for retouch. The flint has a cream patina. It is sub-triangular in section and measures 19.91 mm long, 6.78 mm wide, 1.77 mm thick and weighs 0.2 grams.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake, probably Mesolithic in date. The flake does not appear to have been deliberately retouched along either lateral edge. There may be retouch at the distal end, although it is possible that this occurred whilst the flake was still attached to the core. The flake is slightly cortical at the proximal end. The flint used is a pale cream colour with small brown inclusions. It measures 44.07 mm long, 15 mm wide, 7.61 mm thick and weighs 4.9 grams.

A flint flake, probably Mesolithic in date. What appears to be retouch along one edge is probably more recent damage as there is a clear discrepancy between the brown/ochre patina of the surface of the flake and the grey patina at this edge. It measures 38.88 mm long, 17.07 mm wide, 8.68 mm thick and weighs 4.7 grams.

Knapped flint flake. Prehistoric (probably Mesolithic to Bronze Age). Brown flint. Mass: 3.1g; length: 29.5mm; width: 21.4mm; thickness: 6.3mm. On the ventral face there is a bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture. On the dorsal face there are negative flake scars and small areas of cortex (<5%) at the distal and proximal ends. Approximately 60% of the dorsal face is patinated.

Knapped flint blade. Prehistoric, probably mesolithic/neolithic. Mass: 3.9g; length: 35mm; width: 18mm; thickness: 7mm. Brown flint with approximately 10% cortex on the ventral face. There are ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face and arrises and negative flake scars on the dorsal face. There is some damage to the edges of the blade, and possible retouch on the proximal end and on a small area at the distal end of the dorsal face.

Nineteen knapped flint flakes/blades with retouch or probable retouch. Length: 15mm-57mm, width: 13mm-32mm, thickness: 5mm-14mm. Total mass: 88g. Prehistoric (Mesolithic – Bronze Age). Following Bond’s methodology (2004), an analysis of the length/breadth ratio of the assemblage supports a Mesolithic to Bronze Age date.

A knapped flint flake. Length 29.1mm; width: 18.5mm; thickness: 5.9mm; mass: 2.9g. The blade is non-cortical and grey in colour. The blade has convex sides which run from a narrow proximal end to the wider broken base at the distal end. On the ventral face of the scarred (?retouch) narrow proximal end there is a bulb of percussion, with pronounced ripples of the concoidal fracture below this. One edge of the blade has some small scars on both dorsal and ventral faces, creating a mildly serrated edge. The other edge is a scarred ridge with a slight notch in it. The blade is likely to b…
