A gold circular hoop or ring with a tubular element projecting at one point, that could be part of a swivel fitting, probably from a fob or watch chain. The object has no hallmarks or stamps, but the condition, style and construction suggest a Modern date of AD 1800 - 1980. The hoop is circular in cross-section. The tubular fitting has a square base with a circular recess, and then a reel moulded circular tube that passes completely through the hoop. It is 24.6mm long, 23.1mm wide and 3mm thick. 2.6g.

A gold disc, probably part of a late Post Medieval or Modern collar stud or similar dress fitting, dating from AD 1850 - 2000. It is a shallowly domed disc with no decoration. The reverse is concave and is partially covered with a black coating, perhaps an adhesive as there is no other evidence of attachment. There is a flange round the edge which is flatter and uncoated. The disc would probably have been attached to a central shaft terminating in a smaller domed disc which would have sat against the neck after being threaded though a collar.  Measurements are; diameter 10.8mm, th…

A gold and gem finger ring of Medieval date, about AD 1150 - 1500, but most likely to be AD 1200 - 1300. It is a stirrup shaped ring, of angular D shaped cross-section on the hoop, with the sides rising up to a narrow upright bezel which is triangular in profile. There is a pentagonal setting at the apex. This holds a clear blue gem. It is white where damaged, perhaps suggesting it is glass. There is no other decoration, markings or inscription. An incomplete gold Brancaster type Roman finger ring with decorated with a square shaped bezel, dating to about AD350-AD450. The ring is broken and mishapen. The band either side of the bezel is stretched. On one side the ring band turns down 90 degrees before terminating with a break. On the other side the band turns 90 degrees again, though this time the remaining section is bent back on itself. It is not possible to deduce if any part of the ring band is missing, or to confirm its original shape. The profile of the ring band is straight on the inner face and slightly…

A complete Iron Age coin. Though originally suggested to be a gold plated contemporary copy of a gold stater of the North Eastern region / Corieltavi with a copper core (Esuprasu type dating from about AD 40 - 47), it is also suggested that this might be a coin with an unusual level of copper mixed with gold (as those with copper cores tend to weigh less). The coin is 20.1mm in diameter, 3.0mm thick and weighs 5.47g. The coin is dished, concave on the horse face. Obverse: Wreath crossed by bar with crescents at end and a ring of pellets in each cresecent. Reverse: Styli…

A gold medieval finger ring with external inscription and foliate decoration dating from AD 1400 - 1500. The inscription is in dense blackletter script and probably reads: Je le veul which is medieval French and can perhaps be translated as "I wish/want it". This can be interpreted as a love motto. The box bezel is made of sheet gold and is 3.1mm high and measures 8mm long by 5mm wide. The missing gem would have been held in place by the inturned edge of the bezel. The sides of the bezel are decorated with rounded rectangular vertical indentations, five on each side, which would have been filled with enamel, but this no longer survives. A gold Post Medieval mourning ring dating from 1683. The ring has a simple D-section hoop, with engraved decoration on the convex outer face forming a stylised skull bezel, seen in a three-quarter view looking to the viewer's left along the hoop. The outline of the skull is a V-section groove which runs up the back of the skull in a curve, along the top in a straight line, and curves down the other side of the skull. A straight line along the base has four short nicks at right angles to it, projecting into the face. These probably represent teeth in the upper jaw. The base lin…

A complete, but folded, sheet gold basket-shaped ornament of Bronze Age date (2500-2200 BC). The object is composed of a single, oval sheet of gold, rolled into a cylinder. There is an integral, flat, sub-rectangular tang projecting from the centre of one long edge which appears to be truncated. In use, the object would have been a tube, but this example has been further folded. Both ends have been folded towards the middle, and the tube has been flattened, making the ornament now sub-rectangular. There is a crease visible about 2mm from the edge of the sheet all the way round, like a …

A complete gold signet (or seal) finger-ring of Post-Medieval date (AD 1500-1700). The bezel is oval in shape and sub-rectangular cross-section and is decorated with a heraldic design consisting of a bird facing left (on the impression) standing on a nest in which is a swaddled infant, all in an ornately shaped shield. The motif can be interpreted as the eagle and child, which can be described heraldically as: on a chapeau [gules], turned up [ermine], an eagle with wings extended [or], preying on an infant in its cradle, swaddled.  There is a beaded border round the edg…

A probably Late Bronze Age (1100-750 BC) solid gold ring of hexagonal cross-section, with flat upper and lower faces, and the internal and external faces to either side being angled. Two areas opposite each other display some wear gloss on the inner surfaces. The outer faces have fairly uniform lack of wear, but do have some scratches. It is 28.4mm external diameter, 20.5mm internal diameter, 4mm thick and weighs 13.2g. The internal angle makes it unlikely that this ring was worn as a finger ring. It is likely to have been a linking component of a composite object or suite of fit…
