An incomplete Roman silver plated denarius of Julia Mamea dating to the period c. AD 221 - 235 (Reece Period 11). Uncertain reverse type. Uncertain mint. Measurements: diameter: 18.15mm; thickness: 1.35mm and weight:1.17g. The reverse and broken edges of the flan has traces of green copper-alloy corrosion. The edge of the flan has a waisted notch at 7 O'clock on the obverse, probably from the creation of a pierced hole for suspension, but where the outer edge has broken away.

The obverse depicts a laureate and draped bust facing right; legend reads: IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG. The reverse shows Providentia standing left with cornucopia and wand pointed at globe at foot; legend reads: PROVIDENTIA AVG. Mint of Rome. RIC IV, pt 2, p. 141, no. 13; BMC VI, p. 230, nos. 86-88. The coin has a mottled orange-brown discolouration over the majority of its surface but where this has spalled the underlying silver can clearly be seen.

A Roman copper-alloy coin, probably an as, of Maximus (AD 235-238), dating to AD 236-8 (Reece Period 11), PIETAS AVG S C (emblems of the priestly colleges), Mint of Rome. (Reece period 11). RIC Vol. IV Part II, no.12b. The original record stated dupondius or as, but dupondii of Maximus are very rare and this is quite a light coin (6.18g) for a dupondius.
