A silver button made of two flower-shaped elements formed from filigree, joined with a central stud and soldered at the edges. Remains of attachment loop on one side. Although filigree decoration appears on 16th century dress hooks and pins, this object, made entirely from filigree, suggests a later dating, possibly 18th century. The form of the button would also suggest a later date.

Silver button comprising domed upper part made from sheet with milled edge and stamped central decoration of a flowerhead; shank applied on centre at back. Form, facture and decoration suggest a 17th century dating. However this may be all that remains of a pair of cufflinks which would date this object much later, to the late 17th or even early 18th century (see 2006 T459). An amended and more cautious dating would probably be late 17th Century. A cast lead/tin alloy button of probable early medieval date. The circular button measures 16.1mm in diameter by 5.2mm in thickness and weighs 4.15g. It has been cast in one piece and has the stubb of an integral shank in the centre of the reverse. The edge of the button is damaged and uneven. The convex front is decorated with a cast floral motif. A very similar button can be seen in Read's 'Metal Buttons c. 900 BC to c. AD 1700' (2005, p. 59, no. 222). This example is from east Devon and is thought to be 16th century.

An incomplete cast lead alloy button of early post-medieval date. The convex circular button measures 16.5mm in diameter and is 7.5mm thick. It weighs 4g. The front of the button has moulded decoration in the form of a central dome surrounded by seven smaller domes. On the back is the stub of the missing integrally cast loop. The edge of the button is damaged. A broadly similar button can be seen in Read's 'Metal Buttons' (2005, p. 61, no. 235). This example, from southern Somerset, is c. 16th century.

The plate of a small copper alloy composite button with missing shank, dating from the 17th-18th century. It is discoidal and conical in shape, with convex upper surface and concave under. The decoration comprises four heart shaped loops radiating from the central peak. No exact parallel has been found for the decoration, but this type of composite button is generaly dated to the 17th-18th centuries (Read, 2005, 74-85). This button has a diameter of 15.54mm, is 5.05mm high and weighs 1.68g.

The shank has a rounded end. The decoration comprises a central six-petalled flower surrounded by free-flowing curvilinear lines formed from small crescents. No exact parallel has been found for the decoration, but this type of button is generaly dated to the 17th century (Read, 2005, 36-49). This button has a diameter of 21.53mm, is 8.00mm high overall and weighs 4.95g.

The shank is rounded. The decoration comprises an engraved six-petalled flower with pointed stamens within a curvilinear border. The size, shape and decoration is very similar to three examples from South Somerset dated to the 17th-18th century (Read, 2005, 34-5, nos. 120-2). This button has a diameter of 15.55mm, the shank is 5.82mm long, the button is 8.31mm high overall and weighs 2.89g.

A cast copper alloy button of probable sixteenth century date. The solid circular button has a convex front and a flat back. The rounded integral shank contains an off-centre drilled hole. The front of the button is decorated with a moulded design consisting of a central pellet surrounded by eight curving spokes with rounded ends. A very similar button can be seen in Read's 'Metal Buttons' (2005, p. 33, no. 112). This example is 16th century in date and was found in north-west Dorset.

A cast copper alloy button of probable late thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century AD date. The solid button is bi-convex and formerly had an integral looped shank, which has broken off. The surface has been tinned. Similar buttons are illustrated in Read's 'Metal Buttons c. 900 BC - C. AD 1700' (2005, pp. 22-3, nos. 63-72).

A cast composite two piece lead/tin alloy button with separate embedded drawn iron wire shank (17th century). The button is discoidal in shape and flat. The decoration is dificult to see but comprises at the very least, two concentric relief circles, with a pattern between. The edge is ragged and flaking, the looped shank is broken and corroded. A good parallel from North Dorset is described in Read's 'Metal Buttons', p.101, no.400.

A late medieval copper alloy button (late 15th-16th centuries). The button is discoidal and solid with a convex front and flat back. It is decorated with a central pellet and a clockwise 8-bladed impeller. It has a rectangular-section sub-lozenge shaped shank. The object has a diameter of 12.06mm and is 14.74mm long (shank length 10.34mm)and weighs 2.84g. A good parallel for this button is recorded in Read (2005, no. 112), although this example is approximately 1mm smaller in diameter than Read's.

A cast copper alloy button of probable late medieval date. The button is oval with a flat back and convex front. It measures 16.2mm by 7.3mm by 12.1mm and weighs 2.6g. In the centre of the back is the integral projecting shank which is perforated by a circular hole. The button appears to be undecorated, although the surfaces are worn. A button of similar size and shape can be seen in Read's 'Metal Buttons c.900 BC - c.AD 1700' (2005, p. 14, no. 41). This example, which is from the Thames foreshore, dates from the 15th century and has moulded-in-relief decoration.

An 18th century cast copper alloy button with central iron boss. A radiating pattern of raised slightly curving rays, widening towards the edge, are separated by lines of punched identations. the reverse is concave with a central cone shank, distinctive of the 18th century, retaining the rusted remains of an iron loop for attachment.

The front of the button is slightly conical with a central circular knop. There are traces of cast lines around this. One the back is the stub of the shank. This button probably dates from the 17th century AD.
