Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude flint scraper, which could be of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date, produced from a secondary flake. The dorsal face has three primary long, thin, vertical flaking scars. The butt is fairly narrow. The ventral face has a prominent bulb with clear ripple lines, suggesting that a hard hammer was used. A small amount of very crude, uneven low angle to semi-abrupt, short retouch can be seen, alternating between both faces along each side. There may also be a very small amount of retouch along the edge of the distal end. At the distal end a small amount of chalky, orange cortex …

Post-Medieval copper alloy double loop buckle frame. The buckle is sub-rectangular in shape. The short sides of the outer face are decorated with flower-like mouldings, which protrude outwards slightly, whilst there is trefoil curlicue moulding along the longer sided, to either side of the central strap bar. The strap bar is slightly narrowed. This, and a patch opposite it on the inside of the frame, are coated with iron errosion, which is probably the remains of an iron pin. Traces of tinning can be seen in places on the surface. The outer face of the buckle is slightly r…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy handle from a cooking vessel such as a posnet or skillet. The handle is 'D' shaped in cross section, with a flat upper surface and a convex, rounded reverse. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded chevron design surrounded by a raised border along both edges. Towards the centre of this pattern a slight groove runs across the width of the object, interrupting the design and correlating with a bulge in the metal at the same point on the reverse. When viewed from the side the handle also changes angle very slightly at this point. The handle widens …

Lead alloy Post-Medieval button. The button is discoidal and flat. To the reverse is the remains of an integral shank, which is now missing. The upper face is decorated with a rosette. Copper alloy Post-Medieval hooked mount from a sword belt. The object is roughly sub-rectangular in shape, but the sides of the upper half curve inwards. A thin strip extends from one end, curving into a hook. However, the end of this hook is now missing. There are two circular rivet holes at either end of the mount. A fairly similar mount can be seen in Read (2001, p.42, no.359), although this is of a slightly different shape. Read (ibid, p.30) dates this to the c.16th century, suggesting a similar date for this example. Length: 33.54mm, Width: 15.51mm, Thickness:3.24mm, Weight: 5.6g

When viewed from the dorsal face the microlith curves slightly to the left. It is sub-triangular in cross-section, with a central ridge running along the dorsal face. Very fine retouch can be seen along both edges, alternating between faces. There are several small notches along both edges, creating an almost serrated edge. A slight notch to either side of the proximal end creates a slight narrowing of this section…

An unfinished spindle whorl, made from a what appears to be a piece of stone. The object is disk shaped and both surfaces are flattened. One one face there is a fairly deep off-centre depression. One the other face there is a further depression, roughly the same position, but slightly shallower. It is likely that these were originally intended to meet, together forming a hole through the object. The material is brownish in colour, hard and with a fine slightly sandy texture - perhaps mudstone.  A few smooth, shiny, reddish coloured veins run across both faces - maybe the result of …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint arrowhead of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Only the tip survives. This has a rounded end and is oval in cross-section with fairly sharp edges. Both faces are covered with fine, invasive, scaled retouch. The flint is light brown in colour and slightly translucent. All faces, including the break are covered with a patchy, milky patina. Unfortunately, because the butt of the arrowhead is missing, its original form is difficult to discern and therefore it is hard to date it more closely than this. A copper alloy finger ring, probably of Post-Medieval date.  The ring is small in size and 'D' shaped when viewed from above. The bezel consists of four flattened lobes in a cruciform arrangement, the outer surface of each decorated with a single small dot within an engraved ring. The band is thin and 'D' shaped in cross-section. The metal is brownish in colour with the remains of a shiny green patina in places on the inner face.
